Vietnamese tennis prioritizes youth force: 2 stars will not compete in SEA Games 33

It is almost certain that the two top Vietnamese tennis players, Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang, will not be playing for the Vietnamese tennis team in Davis Cup or SEA Games this year. Vietnamese tennis is trying to build a successor force.

Selecting forces from national team tournament

The National Team Tennis Championship is taking place in Bac Ninh with 3 events: men's team, women's team, and mixed team. The leader of the Vietnam Tennis Federation (VTF) said that this tournament is the basis for selecting the Vietnamese tennis team to participate in the Davis Cup Group 3 Asia-Pacific region hosted by Vietnam in July, and further to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games taking place in December in Thailand.

Two leading Vietnamese tennis players, Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang, have not competed in domestic or international tennis tournaments for quite a long time. In the past, Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang were involved in the "hot" sport of pickleball and continuously achieved success. At the ongoing national team tennis championship, these two players also did not participate. Therefore, VTF proactively built its force based on the remaining factors, in which priority was given to youth, looking towards the future.

Vu Ha Minh Duc (22 years old), Nguyen Minh Phat (18 years old), Tu Le Khanh Duy (23 years old) are among the expected players selected to participate in the Davis Cup, and further prepare for the 33rd SEA Games. Minh Duc and Minh Phat will play together in the AP Sports Club, along with veteran tennis player Hoang Thanh Trung to participate in the 2025 national team tennis tournament. Meanwhile, Tu Le Khanh Duy will participate in the national team tournament in the Xuan Phuc - Ninh Binh Club.

Accept "empty-handed" to start over

With a young force, whose level cannot be compared to the senior Ly Hoang Nam, Vietnamese tennis is at risk of losing everything in Davis Cup and SEA Games.

In the upcoming Davis Cup Group 3, although playing at home, the Vietnamese tennis team will find it difficult to move up in the rankings when they do not have the best squad and have to compete with formidable opponents such as Thailand and Indonesia. Similarly, in the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnamese tennis team is at risk of "going empty-handed" when opponents Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines currently have better squads.

VTF leaders said that Vietnamese tennis is facing many difficulties and challenges, but it has not given up, and has even received more attention. VTF is making efforts to host Davis Cup Group 3 to help players compete at home, while also serving the fans' need to enjoy top-notch matches. Tournaments in the national system are maintained, expanded in scale and content. At the same time, VTF also coordinates with clubs and localities to organize international tournaments, prioritizing youth tournaments so that Vietnamese athletes can hone their skills and experience in the field.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Son, Vice President and General Secretary of VTF, said: "In the current difficult context, we always strive to inspire and inspire the passion for tennis in the community as well as motivate young athletes. Youth training is also a top priority for Vietnamese tennis. In the near future, the Vietnamese tennis team, in addition to domestic training, is expected to have an international training plan to improve their skills."
