Ho Chi Minh City: Baby Hai, 10 years old, had chest pain, left nipple secreted brown fluid, thought to be cancer but the doctor discovered papilloma in the nipple - a rare condition in children.

In addition to the chest symptoms, Hai still eats and lives normally. There is no family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Ultrasound results at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City showed a tumor at the 11 o'clock position, close to the nipple, with a dilated duct, inside there was a solid mass with poor echo (little echo), with increased vascularity, about 3 cm in size.

On February 5, Master, Doctor Huynh Ba Tan, Department of Breast Surgery, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the child patient had a papilloma in the mammary duct (intraductal papilloma). This tumor is common in women aged 35-55. So far, there have only been a few cases in girls aged 13-19.

"In more than 20 years of practice, this is the first time I have encountered intraductal papilloma in a 10-year-old girl," said Dr. Tan, adding that world medical literature recorded in 2017 an 11-year-old Turkish girl with a similar breast tumor.

Intraductal papillomas are benign, wart-like growths that develop inside the milk ducts of the breast and are often difficult to feel. They are made up of glandular tissue along with fibrous tissue and blood vessels. They can produce a clear, bloody nipple discharge that is sometimes painful.

The patient underwent surgery to remove the entire tumor with needle positioning under ultrasound guidance, helping to accurately determine the nature of the tumor and at the same time resolve the condition of nipple discharge.

After making an incision along the areola, Dr. Tan separated the breast tissue using a needle to remove the entire tumor without damaging the surrounding milk ducts. The surgical wound was sutured cosmetically to prevent the patient from feeling self-conscious later. Pathology results confirmed that the intraductal papilloma was benign.

Intraductal papillomas are usually detected by ultrasound. They are about 1-2 cm in size, but can be larger depending on the size of the milk duct. Your doctor may order a biopsy to rule out cancer.

Dr. Tan said the cause of intraductal papilloma is currently unknown. Adults with intraductal papilloma have a high risk of breast cancer. In children, due to the small number of cases, the relationship between this type of papilloma and breast cancer is unknown. However, when detecting abnormalities in a child's breast, parents should take their child to the doctor for early diagnosis and treatment.
