Ho Chi Minh City raises the clearance of Binh Trieu 1 Bridge and Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge with a total investment of about 245 billion VND, expected to be completed in 2025.


On the morning of December 31, the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center (HCMC Department of Transport) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project to raise the clearance of Binh Trieu 1 Bridge (National Highway 13) and Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge (National Highway 1).

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh, Director of the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center, said that Ho Chi Minh City currently has 14 bridges on the Saigon River, of which only two bridges with clearance that do not meet standards are Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge and Binh Trieu 1 Bridge.

To synchronously meet the clearance of bridges on the Saigon River to reach a minimum of 7m according to the inland waterway infrastructure planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 of the Prime Minister. To facilitate the development of waterway transport infrastructure, develop inland waterway ports in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong province, Tay Ninh province, reduce the load on road traffic... Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport coordinates with many units and experts to research solutions to raise bridges to ensure clearance according to the project's objectives.

Accordingly, the clearance raising of Binh Trieu 1 Bridge on National Highway 13 has the starting point about 93.4m from the existing bridge abutment on Binh Thanh District side (towards Mien Dong Bus Station); the end point is about 92.4m from the existing bridge abutment on Thu Duc City side (towards Pham Van Dong Street). The total length of the entire project is about 770.4m.

In terms of scale, the Binh Trieu 1 bridge raising project achieves a clearance of BxH = (50x7)m; the design load is guaranteed to be equivalent to the load of the existing bridge.

The solution is to lift the bridge's span structure (two approach spans on the Binh Thanh side, one main span and one approach span on the Thu Duc side), lifting height 1,081m using a hydraulic jack system.

At the same time, add a bored pile foundation system to support the existing abutment and pier foundation system; increase the height of the existing abutment and bridge pier structure with reinforced concrete.

For Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge on National Highway 1, the starting point of the route is about 152m from the existing bridge abutment on the District 12 side (towards the Nga Tu Ga intersection); the ending point of the route is about 128m from the existing bridge abutment on the Thu Duc City side (towards the Binh Phuoc intersection). The total length of the entire project is about 759.69m.

Regarding scale, the Binh Phuoc 1 bridge raising project achieves a clearance of BxH = (50x7)m; the remaining contents remain the same as the existing bridge scale; the design load is guaranteed to be equivalent to the existing bridge load.

The main design solution is to jack up the bridge's span structure (one approach span on the District 12 side, one main span and one approach span on the Thu Duc City side) with a height of about 1.25m using a hydraulic jack system.

This project also adds a bored pile foundation system to support the existing abutment and pier foundation system; increases the height of the existing abutment and bridge pier structure with reinforced concrete.

Mr. Vinh said that the total investment for the project to raise the clearance of Binh Trieu 1 bridge is nearly 134 billion VND; the total investment for raising the clearance of Binh Phuoc 1 bridge is nearly 111 billion VND. The construction time for both bridges is 8 months, to be completed in 2025.

Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, highly appreciated the efforts of the Department of Transport to start the project to raise the clearance of the remaining two substandard bridges in the city.

According to Mr. Cuong, Binh Trieu 1 Bridge and Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge have been exploited for a long time, are old... so upgrading the bridge clearance is very difficult. In addition, organizing construction below to increase the bridge clearance while still ensuring the traffic flow above is very high, is a challenge and requires great effort.

The Ho Chi Minh City leader added that the Saigon River has strategic significance for economic and cultural development, connecting with the provinces of Tay Ninh, Binh Duong, and Cambodia. The implementation of the bridge clearance elevation project is a commitment to regional development, ensuring synchronous exploitation of important waterways.

"Currently, there are 14 bridges, but only two bridges, Binh Trieu 1 and Binh Phuoc 1, do not have a minimum clearance height of 7m to ensure the movement of ships. Therefore, the solution of raising the clearance is very necessary. After raising the clearance, it will create a smooth traffic flow," said Mr. Cuong.

In addition, according to Mr. Cuong, Ho Chi Minh City has built many new standard bridges, making waterway traffic more convenient, which is of great significance when the city implements the Ring Road 3 project. Accordingly, vehicles transporting materials to the project by waterway are easy, helping to reduce transportation costs, ensure time and reduce traffic pressure on roads, contributing to socio-economic development in the process of regional connectivity.

Mr. Cuong suggested that the HCM City Department of Transport should pay attention when implementing projects to ensure the synchronous clearance of waterways; continue to pay attention to a series of projects in the coming time such as Xuyen Tam canal, Tham Luong - Ben Cat - Rach Nuoc Len canal... when building new bridges, the bridge clearance must be ensured.

In particular, during construction, contractors must ensure absolute safety, avoid traffic jams, and ensure progress and quality as committed. In addition, efforts must be made to concentrate resources and strive to shorten construction time from 8 months to 6 months.
