(Dan Tri) - Despite concerns about the risk of stealing user information, DeepSeek continues to show incredible growth, becoming the second most visited AI chatbot in the world.
According to Similarweb, a company that tracks and compares website traffic globally, traffic to the DeepSeek.com website has seen a significant increase in recent times.
Similarweb said DeepSeek has surpassed other popular AI chatbots such as Google's Gemini or Character.AI to become the second most visited AI website in the world, behind only OpenAI's ChatGPT.
According to Similarweb, traffic to DeepSeek.com hit a record 49 million last Tuesday (January 28), up 614% from a week ago. The day before, the site had also unexpectedly spiked to 33.4 million.
Latest data from Similarweb shows that traffic to DeepSeek.com is currently stable at around 29 to 30 million visits per day.
"In the US, DeepSeek peaked at 4.9 million daily visits on January 28. On January 31, DeepSeek had over 2.4 million visits from US users alone, an increase of 813.3% compared to the previous week," Similarweb said.
While these figures do not take into account traffic through mobile apps, they show strong growth for DeepSeek, as a month earlier the AI site was receiving only around 300,000 visits per day.
DeepSeek's traffic has far surpassed two other popular AI tools, Google's Gemini and Character.AI, with 10 million and 6 million daily visits, respectively.
However, DeepSeek’s traffic still lags far behind ChatGPT, the world’s most popular AI tool. Similarweb says chatgpt.com currently attracts between 130 and 140 million visits per day.
The shift of many US users to DeepSeek has affected US-based AI tools. Many say DeepSeek is faster to respond and understands user questions better than tools like Gemini, Llama, or even ChatGPT.
DeepSeek's "rise" shows no signs of stopping, despite the US and many Western countries expressing concerns that this AI tool can collect user information.
Last week, the US House of Representatives and the state of Texas ordered all employees not to install and use DeepSeek on government-issued devices to prevent the disclosure of sensitive information.
The US House of Representatives said it would assess the safety of DeepSeek before deciding whether to allow employees to use it again.
The Italian Personal Data Protection Authority (GPDP) believes that DeepSeek could pose a high risk to the data of millions of people in the country. DeepSeek has now been removed from the Google Play and App Store in Italy.
Meanwhile, in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission (DPC) has also expressed concerns about the security of DeepSeek. In Belgium, a consumer protection association has filed a complaint with the data protection authority about this AI tool.
The Korea Personal Information Protection Commission will also investigate DeepSeek's management of user information. If violations are found, the commission will submit a recommendation to the Korean government to ban people from using DeepSeek.
