Parents and students come to Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City) to submit additional 10th grade enrollment applications.
There are 1,014 students applying for additional admission to grade 10.
There are 108 high schools recruiting additional 10th graders with a total of about 3,800 students. Students who fail their 3 wishes can register for a public high school on the condition that their exam scores must be equal to or greater than the standard score of their 3rd wish of the high school they applied to.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training stipulates that high schools must establish admissions councils and receive student registration documents until August 8. After that, August 9 and 10 will be used for reviewing and entering data into the Department of Education and Training's exam management software.
Preliminary statistics on the system on the afternoon of August 9 showed that about 1,014 students had submitted applications for admission, accounting for about 1/3 of the additional enrollment target announced by the department.
According to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters, high schools in the inner city received very few applications for additional admission. In particular, the top schools had almost no or only one student applying. Meanwhile, high schools in the suburbs, especially those lacking many students, had about 20% to 30% of the target.
For example, Phong Phu High School (Binh Chanh District) is the school with the most shortage of enrollment quotas, with 283 enrollment quotas but 82 students applied; Nguyen Van Tang High School (Thu Duc City) is short of 202 students but 65 students applied; Nguyen Van Linh High School (District 8) is short of 274 students but received 44 applications...
Ms. Hoang Thi Hao, Principal of Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City), informed that the school was still short of 74 students, but 27 students submitted additional enrollment applications. It turns out that the school recruited nearly 1/3 of the remaining enrollment quota.
In Cu Chi district, high schools received relatively few applications compared to the number of remaining quotas and need to recruit more. Specifically, An Nhon Tay High School needed to recruit 139 more students but only 12 students submitted applications; Trung Lap High School needed to recruit 153 students but only received 7 applications. Or Phu Hoa High School needed to recruit 41 students but only received 7 applications...
The first year Ho Chi Minh City recruited additional 10th graders
Why do top schools have few students enrolling?
Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), said that the school still lacks 11 quotas, but after 5 days of arranging the reception department, no students registered.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dang Khoa, Principal of Trung Vuong High School (District 1), the school received an additional enrollment application while there were still 30 students missing.
Or Ernst Thälmann High School (District 1) also received one application; Go Vap High School (Go Vap District) received 3 applications...
The leaders of the Department of Education and Training assessed that high schools in suburban areas, due to the long distance, find it difficult to attract students to register for additional admission even though the admission scores are not high. Particularly for high schools in inner-city areas, the top schools have few students registering because students in these areas who are not admitted often have other study orientations such as non-public schools or vocational training centers near their homes because the curriculum and examination regimes are the same as those of the high school system.
According to regulations of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, on August 12, schools will announce the list of additional admitted students. From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on August 16, high schools will organize the admission of students.
It is known that this is the first year that Ho Chi Minh City has implemented additional enrollment for regular 10th graders. In response to the question of whether this year's additional enrollment will become a precedent for the following school years, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that after the additional enrollment, the department will base on the data to study plans for the coming school years to create more opportunities for students and not waste assigned study places. "It cannot be said whether it will be annual or not, but in the new school year, the department will make appropriate adjustments so that the enrollment for 10th graders is completed by the end of July, helping high schools to proactively arrange their educational plans," the head of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education emphasized.
