Is traditional journalism losing?

(CLO) 83.3% of Vietnamese people use the Internet to read newspapers, but 96.1% use social networks. This number says it all about the fierce competition in the media industry.

Readers are migrating to digital platforms.

In fact, around the world, traditional journalists are being overtaken by young creators like Dylan Page (10 million followers) and Vitus Spehar (3 million followers), who are providing a socially native approach to news content.

Young people say they like these platforms because they create transparency and trust, are easy to use, and offer new perspectives.

According to Wearesocial's 2024 statistics, 83.3% of Vietnamese users use the Internet to read news content, down 4.3% compared to 2023. However, up to 96.1% of Vietnamese Internet users use social networks, 84% of Internet users watch streaming content.

In terms of time, in 2024, Vietnamese people will spend an average of 1 hour and 47 minutes per day reading online newspapers, a decrease of 15 minutes compared to 2023. Meanwhile, the average time spent on social media channels is 2 hours and 25 minutes.

These are vivid numbers showing that Vietnamese press is gradually being overshadowed by social media channels.

Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nhat - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus e-newspaper cited a story when he attended a number of recent international conferences, he was really startled by the warnings given by media experts, with bold words. For example, in the past we were only familiar with hearing the phrase "print newspapers are declining", but now people say that traditional forms of journalism, including print newspapers, radio, and television, are "dying".

“Therefore, it is no longer strange that a podcaster or vlogger has more viewers/listeners than a mainstream press agency. It shows that many press agencies have not yet “caught the wave” of young people. Digital platforms have long since stopped prioritizing press agencies, while many news publishers are reluctant or slow to change, leading to a failure to attract readers when they leave their traditional battlefields,” said Mr. Hoang Nhat.

Join hands with technology to go far together

According to VietnamPlus Deputy Editor-in-Chief Nguyen Hoang Nhat, in the past, when we thought about a topic, we would think about how many words the article would have, and whether it was a report, interview, or reportage. But in the digital age, readers receive information in many different forms.

“That’s why we consider changing the way we tell stories and enhancing the reader experience as our top priority. The information is still the same, but we have to find a way to make them feel interested,” said Mr. Nhat.

RapNewsPlus is such an innovative approach. And most of the journalistic works that helped VietnamPlus win high awards are multimedia products, with new storytelling methods, such as the most recent 3D interactive work celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital, helping readers immerse themselves in the historical story.

Since 2021, VietnamPlus e-newspaper has also collaborated with Insider Company to pilot the collection of user data to serve the packaging of newsletters, delivered directly to users via Newsletter - Editorial Letter and Web-Push - push notification. In November 2023, the newspaper will allow readers to log in via Google Account, through which the editorial office will grasp user history, moving towards connecting and managing users via Google Reader Revenue Manager.

Emphasizing the close and binding cooperation to go far together with technology and platform development partners, Mr. Cao Anh Minh - General Director of Ho Chi Minh City Television Station said that in addition to cooperating with platforms to bring programs with wide coverage and reach many audiences, advertising technology cooperation also needs research and development.

Some new forms of technology advertising include DBI - technology advertising inserted into the program like real life, virtual reality advertising - the form of scanning by phone on posters, programs, or local identifiers will appear with different advertisements when broadcasting programs, live broadcasting events.

General Director Cao Anh Minh commented that AI technology is currently a trend, and also the future for all aspects of social life. The unlimited creativity of AI, if combined with the rationality of managers and implementers, can help reduce costs and improve quality in program production and many other fields.

"For example: There are many creative photos and clips created with AI on the internet today. Some photos or clips make viewers very happy. While an artist would need a lot of time to draw such a photo. AI not only does it in a very short time but also creates many different versions," said Mr. Minh.

According to Mr. Cao Anh Minh, HTV always wants to contribute to promoting technological innovation. Recently, the first International Science, Technology and Innovation Festival was held at Saigon Riverside Park.

This is a program organized by the People's Committee of Thu Duc City in collaboration with HTV. With the theme of Science, Technology and Digital Transformation, bringing highly applicable products for people to experience directly, focusing on people, the program is also a technology playground for large technology enterprises and corporations. In addition, there is also a space for students to be creative on stage, a startup competition for students.

"The daily changes and developments of digital technology; the viewing and purchasing behavior of generations, especially young people; the increasingly detailed and practical needs of brands - these are issues that press and television agencies need to closely follow and sympathize with. To survive and develop, the press must go beyond journalism, not only stopping at creating news but also creating new values", HTV General Director shared.
