Mine clearance activities in the province have been temporarily suspended due to the US Government's suspension of aid.

(QBĐT) - On February 11, news from the Department of Foreign Affairs said that because the US Government stopped funding, the activities of mine clearance projects in the province were suspended.

Accordingly, on January 25, the US Government issued an executive order guiding the review of foreign aid provided by the US Government, within 90 days, applicable to all US Government foreign assistance programs in humanitarian and development fields globally.

In order to implement the decree, the Office of Disarmament and Disarmament Affairs under the Political-Military Department, the US Department of State - the sponsor of 4 organizations: MAG, NPA, PTVN, CRS to implement projects on overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines in Vietnam in general and Quang Binh in particular, has sent a document to all project implementation partners in all countries requesting the immediate suspension of all activities funded by the US Department of State, thus affecting the field of mine action at the global level.

In the province, there are currently 4 projects funded by the US Department of State, including: Detection and handling of explosive ordnance in Quang Binh province (phase VII) implemented by MAG; cluster bomb traces survey in Quang Binh province (CMRS) and the project to establish and support a database unit and coordinate mine action activities in Quang Binh province implemented by NPA; detection and handling of explosive ordnance in Quang Binh province implemented by PTVN; education on mine accident prevention for the community in Quang Binh province implemented by CRS has been suspended immediately (since after the Lunar New Year holiday of the organizations) until further notice.

Currently, there are more than 350 employees working for projects in Quang Binh of MAG, NPA, PTVN organizations. In addition, in Quang Binh, there are also a number of projects funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) that are being implemented, which are also affected by the US Government's request for a temporary suspension.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, the US Government's request to suspend programs and projects has significantly affected the areas that the province and its partners are coordinating to implement, especially the work of overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines left over from the war in the province, the risk of affecting people's lives due to accidents caused by bombs and mines left over from the war as well as affecting hundreds of workers working on the projects.
