Traditional press needs to be more creative in combining tradition with digital platforms to both meet demands and reach people quickly and promptly.

The above opinion was shared on the sidelines of the 8th Session, November 13, by a number of National Assembly delegates.

Assessing the first session of the 8th session of the National Assembly, delegate Quan Minh Cuong (Dong Nai) acknowledged that this was a session with many innovations, the draft laws presented at the session were more concise, brief, condensed and raised issues of principles and guidelines. In addition, there was stronger decentralization and delegation of power, or in other words, giving local authorities the responsibility to be autonomous, self-made, and self-responsible in their decisions.

“We should not draft Laws and draft Laws in too much detail or specificity. In the past, we thought that doing so was good, but the reality of the past decades has shown and proven that doing so is not good. Life outside is full of fluctuations, always changing, changing too quickly. If we do not delegate or decentralize power to different levels, to the Government, provinces, and ministries, then even a small amendment to the Law and submitting it to the National Assembly will not be timely,” said delegate Quan Minh Cuong.

On the sidelines of the Session, delegate Tran Quoc Tuan (Tra Vinh) assessed that the drafting of laws, ordinances, and contents included in the 8th Session's agenda had been carefully prepared, discussed, and debated, including many contents closely related to serving the country's socio-economic development requirements, many of which voters are very interested in.

Commenting on the question and answer session at the Session, delegate Doan Tra Vinh shared that the National Assembly Chairman's handling of the question and answer session was "very flexible and decisive," and the question and answer session ensured "depth coverage of the content."

Sharing about “press economy” and “opportunities and resources for revolutionary press in the face of the explosion of social networks” – one of the issues attracting attention at this session, delegate Tran Quoc Tuan said that the media in general and the contents of the Party and State’s policies and guidelines need to be responsive through information channels and social networks. However, the State and localities, local authorities and all levels need to study policies and ways of “ordering” so that press agencies can properly implement and quickly concretize the Party and State’s policies and guidelines.

“We must find a way for media agencies and newspapers to have content to carry out and operate. If competition between traditional newspapers and social networks simply occurs as it is now, it will be very difficult for newspapers to compete with social networks because social networks have advantages over traditional newspapers. However, revolutionary newspapers must develop to thoroughly communicate policies, helping people to grasp those policies,” affirmed delegate Tran Quoc Tuan.

“If people want to see official, authentic content, they go to reputable press agencies because social networks today provide news quickly and sensitively, but that information needs to be verified. Traditional press agencies need to be more creative in combining traditional press with digital platforms, to meet the requirements of being fast and accurate, but also ensuring the full transmission of the Party and State's policies to the people quickly and promptly,” said delegate Tran Quoc Tuan.

Also according to delegate Tran Quoc Tuan, creating a special mechanism allowing the press to do business "needs to be carefully considered" to both create favorable conditions for the press to have a source of revenue to develop but must be strictly managed, "to avoid many unpleasant problems" arising in the operations of press agencies.

On the sidelines of the meeting, delegate Hoang Van Cuong (Hanoi) shared about the upcoming plan to amend the Press Law, including the mention of allowing some major press agencies to do business in content and business around the media sector. The activities of press agencies must be based on the tasks and professional activities of the press agency. What belongs to their tasks and functions will be "ordered" by the governing agency and the State.

“When a press agency meets its expertise and social needs, we must exploit and promote that capacity to generate revenue. The most important thing is that all these activities must aim at the goals of revolutionary journalism, serving the right purpose and not chasing after the goal of gaining revenue and jobs, which is far from our main purpose and tasks,” delegate Hoang Van Cuong shared./.
