Dairy cows on three farms in California, the top milk-producing state in the US, have tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza, according to the California Department of Agriculture.
This is the 14th state to be affected by the avian flu outbreak in dairy cows in the U.S., with 13 farm workers and more than 190 herds of cows infected nationwide since March, according to federal data.
No human cases of H5N1 have been confirmed in California, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The infected dairy cows, located in the state’s Central Valley, began showing symptoms on Aug. 25. The virus’s spread from poultry to cows has raised concerns that the virus could adapt to spread between people.
