Sellers in Ben Thanh market charge 10 times the selling price.

According to the Ben Thanh Market Management Board, the female vendor who asked for 700,000 VND for 3 pairs of socks named VTT (living in Tan Phu district) rented two stalls 194 - 196 (connected to the wall) from two other business owners a few months ago to sell clothes.

Ms. VTT also received the penalty decision and pledged not to re-offend.

Speaking to Thanh Nien , Mr. Ngo Van Ha, Head of Ben Thanh Market Management Board, said: "The recent incident has made the market's merchant community angry because it affects other honest traders. After the pandemic, the People's Committee of District 1 as well as the Market Management Board spent a lot of effort to build the image of Ben Thanh Market more and more beautiful in the eyes of tourists and shoppers, but because of 'one bad apple spoils the barrel'. When the incident happened, we also invited the stall owner to come, if there is a repeat offense, the contract will be terminated. We have publicly announced the punishment to all merchants in the market as a deterrent."

Mr. Ha added that the prices of goods in the market are clearly listed according to market regulations, but he also admitted that vendors often overcharge, because that is the "market culture" of Vietnamese people and tourists also consider this an interesting experience. However, the case of 700,000 VND for 3 pairs of socks is unacceptable. In addition, stalls must comply with registration and sell whatever they want, and the Market Management Board regularly inspects and handles this.

After the above incident, Ben Thanh Market Management Board also called on traders to sign a commitment to sell goods at the listed price, not to solicit or force customers to pay higher prices... If they violate, they will be punished according to regulations.

Previously, Thanh Nien reported on the case of KiKi, a Japanese YouTuber fluent in Vietnamese, who experienced shopping at Ben Thanh market. When he stopped by a fashion stall, KiKi asked to buy 3 pairs of black socks. The saleswoman sat on a pile of clothes, with stacks of socks in front of her, and said one pair was 250,000 VND, tripled to 700,000 VND. He was shocked and asked the seller over and over again if it was really 700,000 VND for 3 pairs of socks of unknown brand.

Immediately after that, KiKi used Vietnamese and the story got intense. "700,000 VND is too expensive," he said and captioned the video that he wanted to "run away" immediately. The seller pulled his hand back and asked him how much he wanted to pay. "60,000 VND only!", he replied. Hearing that, the seller reduced the price to 150,000 VND for 3 pairs. However, when KiKi resolutely turned away, the seller agreed to 60,000 VND.

"Let's run away," he said and hurriedly left the stall. "That place was terrible, I was going to sell it for 10 times the price," he continued. KiKi's story has caused public outrage in recent days...
