Tet holiday with meetings and greetings, certainly cannot lack a cup of wine.

Headaches and nausea from a hangover can be caused by dehydration.

Alcohol increases the need to urinate, causing more water loss. Dr Ross Perry, a GP working in the UK, points out the simple solution is to drink water.

He also recommends eating foods high in potassium. Hangovers are not just caused by dehydration, but also by low electrolyte levels.

Electrolytes, if deficient, can cause nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and irritability.

Drinking alcohol blocks the production of a hormone that helps the body retain water, leading to dehydration and loss of electrolytes like potassium and sodium, he says.

So, eat foods containing potassium such as bananas, oranges, apricots, grapefruit, watermelon, green leafy vegetables, spinach, broccoli, potatoes, mushrooms and peas to help reduce the after-drink condition and replenish lost electrolytes, sobering up faster, according to Express .

Eat foods rich in vitamin C?

Dr. Ross suggests that eating foods rich in vitamin C may also help.

Several studies have shown that medications containing vitamin C have successfully treated hangovers.

Getting a healthy dose of vitamin C before and after drinking can help prevent or reduce the severity of a hangover, says Dr. Perry, so incorporate some veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, green and red peppers or orange juice, tomato juice before the party and the day after.

Take painkillers

Headaches and nausea when drunk may be due to dehydration

Take a Paracetamol if needed, but also get outside and get some fresh air, which will help clear your head, improve your mood and get some much-needed vitamin D, says Perry.

Dr. Perry also offers the following advice:

  • Add apple cider vinegar to food or drinks to restore natural pH after drinking alcohol.
  • Eat less and don't eat fatty foods.
  • Eat more fruit.

How to prevent a hangover from happening in the first place

Dr. Kathryn Basford, a general practitioner working in London (UK), said: Prevention is the best cure.

She suggests the following ways:

  • Track your alcohol intake
  • Drink at a pace that suits your body, rather than trying to keep up with your friends.
  • Drink extra water while drinking alcohol and late at night, to dilute the alcohol in your stomach and slow down absorption.
  • Eat a full meal before drinking, ideally with carbohydrates, and avoid drinking on an empty stomach, according to Express.
