The European Wound Management Conference (EWMA) is the largest annual scientific conference in Europe, bringing together the world's leading professors and wound experts. This year's conference attracted nearly 5,000 participants from 95 countries.
Diabetic foot ulcer patients are increasing
This conference covers 3 main topics: Update the latest guidelines in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Update the development of regenerative medicine on skin substitutes to promote wound healing. Emphasize the role of each member, especially nurses in the multidisciplinary model of intensive care for chronic (difficult to heal) wounds.
Returning home after this conference, excellent physician - MD.CK2 Tran Doan Dao shared: "Not only in Vietnam, but also in the world today, the number of people with diabetes is increasing. The increase in the number of people with diabetes leads to an increase in the rate of people with diabetic foot ulcers. If these foot ulcers are not treated, the patient may have to have their leg amputated.", Doctor Dao emphasized.
A report by an expert from the United States said that the cost of treating diabetic foot ulcers in the United States is eight times the cost of treating cancer.
Management of chronic wounds that are difficult to heal such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers, etc. requires a multidisciplinary model, in which outpatient management of chronic wounds still faces many difficulties in Vietnam.
This expert also emphasized the fear of amputation of most diabetic patients as a lasting obsession when ulcers begin to appear.

The EWMA 2024 conference also affirmed the very important role of nursing in the wound care industry. In developed countries, nurses are well trained in wound care. Nursing is the right arm of doctors. If nurses are well trained, the wound treatment process will be much more effective.
In the UK, nurses trained in the 7-level model can stand alone to care for patients' wounds.
At this conference, many reports emphasized the development of biotechnology to research and create many products to regenerate skin for patients with wounds. The final stage in wound treatment will require covering the patient's wound.
There are many ways to cover wounds such as letting the wound heal itself, skin grafting, skin flap rotation, using regenerative products to cover the patient's wound...
In the world, there is currently a trend of using products from regenerative medicine technology derived from placental membranes... to recreate skin replacement products that can cover wounds. Although the cost of these new products is still high, in the future this will be an inevitable development trend.

38 years of wounds that have not healed
Among the 1,200 presentations and 733 ePoster scientific reports at the EWMA 2024 Conference, there are 2 topics by Dr. Phan Duy Kien and his colleagues. Dr. Duy Kien is the official Vietnamese speaker at this largest conference in Europe.
After a period of both clinical practice and scientific research on treatment technologies for venous ulcers of the lower extremities (VLU), Dr. Phan Duy Kien and his colleagues submitted two topics to the European Wound Conference 2024: "Effectiveness of combining compression, biological foam gauze to protect edges and venous intervention in the treatment of venous ulcers of the lower extremities" and "Clinical case report: Application of negative pressure bridging technique in supporting the treatment of venous ulcers".
Accordingly, the world's advanced wound treatment techniques have been successfully applied by Bernard's team of wound doctors, healing many patients with wounds, especially many complicated ulcers.
A typical case is a 64-year-old male patient with a venous ulcer that did not heal for 6 months due to post-thrombotic syndrome.
Wound specialist Bernard said that this case did not have an indication for deep vein intervention due to post-thrombotic syndrome, but negative pressure suction technique could be used to promote the patient's healing process in addition to compression therapy to control the increased venous pressure in the lower extremities.
After 30 days of applying negative pressure suction bridging, the wound had more granulation tissue and exudate was controlled. The wound was completely healed after 247 days.
In addition, wound specialists at Bernard also emphasize the simultaneous application of many healing measures to speed up healing instead of just using a few simple measures.
Wounds that are difficult to heal account for 85%
Bernard Wound Care Center for Intensive Wound Treatment - Diabetic Foot at 22 Phan Dinh Giot, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City is considered the first specialized unit for treating difficult-to-heal wounds in Ho Chi Minh City, focusing on diabetic foot ulcers, burns, and scars.
Since its establishment, Bernard has received more than a thousand visits for wound examination and treatment; of which difficult-to-heal wounds account for 85% (diabetic foot ulcers account for more than 50%, the rest are other common difficult-to-heal wounds such as venous ulcers, arterial ulcers, pressure ulcers, burns and scars, etc.). The center has successfully treated wounds, with a healing rate of more than 96%. The average time for wound healing is 35.6 days. The longest treatment case was 247 days.
