Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Hanoi University of Education and Thai Nguyen University of Education have stopped considering high school transcripts for admission this year.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, has just said that previously, the school considered independent high school transcripts (about 10%) of the target or combined high school transcripts with specialized competency assessment test scores (30-40% of the target). However, from this year, the school will not use high school transcripts for both of these methods. The reason is that according to the new program, each student will choose and have high school transcripts in different combinations, so this admission is no longer suitable.
The specialized competency assessment exam will be one of the school's main admission methods in 2025. In addition, the school will consider admission based on high school graduation exam results and direct admission according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
In previous years, the admission scores of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education were so high that tens of thousands of excellent students still failed.
Mr. Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of Training Department, said that the high standard scores of the majors are due to the low enrollment quota for this method. The school only recruits a maximum of 10% of the quota, so many majors only recruit 2 candidates, leading to very high standard scores. On the other hand, the number of candidates applying for admission based on the high school transcript method increases every year.
Hanoi National University of Education also abolished the method of admission based on high school transcripts from this year. This school will conduct admissions in 3 ways in 2025, including: admission based on high school graduation exam scores in 2025; direct admission, giving priority to candidates with outstanding abilities and achievements; and admission based on the 2025 SPT Competency Assessment exam scores organized by Hanoi National University of Education.
For the majors of Preschool Education, Physical Education, Music Pedagogy, and Fine Arts Pedagogy, candidates must also take the 2025 Aptitude Test organized by the school to get the aptitude test score for admission combined with the high school graduation exam score.
The University of Education (Thai Nguyen University) also abandoned the method of considering academic records. The admission methods of this school are direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training; considering the results of the competency assessment exam of Hanoi National University, Hanoi National University of Education, Thai Nguyen University (V-SAT-TNU); considering the results of the 2025 graduation exam; considering the graduation results or combining this exam score with the sports aptitude test; considering university preparatory students.
Particularly, Saigon University, which trains many pedagogical majors, has not used the method of considering high school transcripts in university admissions for many years. The methods this school uses for admission are the results of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam for majors not in the teacher training group; the results of the computer-based university entrance assessment exam (V-SAT exam) for majors not in the teacher training group; and the results of the high school graduation exam.
A representative of Saigon University commented that high school learning results depend on the assessment of each locality and school, even each teacher, so there is no uniformity. To ensure the rights of candidates, the school does not use transcripts but uses the results of entrance exams for fair assessment.
The principal of a university frankly said that academic records are not the correct “channel” for schools to recruit students. “A candidate from a mountainous area has a 9-point academic record and another candidate from the city has a 7-point score. How can the school recruit a candidate with a 9-point academic record?” - he said, adding that the key point here is that the way of evaluating by scores in each region and each school is different, leading to not reflecting the true ability of the students.
