According to MacRumors , Apple has confirmed that it has postponed the development of the Apple Watch Ultra version with a microLED screen. Currently, it is unclear whether Apple will continue to develop and launch this product in the future, but at least for the next few years, users will not experience the Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED screen.
The Apple Watch Ultra model launched in 2022 uses standard OLED display technology. Meanwhile, microLED is a different LED display technology, although it has the same advantages as OLED, it is improved in sharpness, fidelity, brightness and more vibrant colors.
Apple has discontinued the Apple Watch project with microLED display
microLED is the first display technology that Apple has designed and developed itself instead of relying on third-party display suppliers like Samsung or LG Display. The company is known to have collaborated with manufacturing partners like TSMC to make microLED displays.
The Cupertino giant has spent more than six years researching and investing billions of dollars in developing microLED technology. In 2015, Apple opened a secret lab in northern Taiwan to research thinner, brighter, and more energy-efficient displays for future iOS devices. Rumors have it that the lab specializes in microLED research.
Initially, rumors suggested that the Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED display would launch in 2025 or 2026. According to Bloomberg, microLED is one of Apple's most important projects. The company is estimated to have more than 300 employees working on microLED display development.
This information has also been confirmed by famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said that Apple's decision came from the fact that the cost of producing MicroLED screens was too high, making the project economically unfeasible. At the same time, he revealed that the staff working on this smartwatch project with MicroLED screens has also quit.
