Apple will loosen and remove restrictions on third-party screen and battery replacements for iPhones later this year, expected to start on the iPhone 16 series.
Apple has just released a white paper that outlines the company’s approach to repairability and device longevity. In the document, the “Apple” revealed that iPhones will have better support for third-party displays and batteries by the end of 2024.
"In an effort to provide more comprehensive support for third-party components, starting in late 2024, Apple will allow users to enable True Tone with third-party components to achieve the best performance. They can turn off True Tone in Settings if the display does not work the way they want," the iPhone maker said in the white paper.

True Tone is a feature that adjusts the color and brightness of the screen based on the ambient light the user is using. However, if the screen is replaced with a non-genuine one, this feature will be disabled.
Apple also said that battery health metrics like maximum capacity and cycle count will work for third-party iPhone batteries starting later this year. However, the company also said that third-party battery metrics are not guaranteed to be accurate.
Currently, battery health indicators such as maximum capacity and cycle count are not displayed for consumers whose devices use third-party batteries.
According to Apple, some third-party batteries are sold as new but are actually used batteries, with battery health indicators adjusted to appear new.
"In an effort to improve third-party battery support by the end of 2024, Apple will display battery health indicators with a message stating that Apple cannot verify the information displayed," the iPhone maker said in the white paper.
These changes will likely be rolled out by Apple with iOS 18 updates later this year, but the company did not provide a specific timeline in its documentation.
Apple's document also emphasizes that users should be wary of the fire risk of third-party components.
