New laser weapon designed for aircraft such as the Royal Air Force's Airbus A400M Atlas
The laser weapon has achieved 100% success in shooting down a variety of targets at the Vidsel test range in Sweden, according to Ministry of Defence officials. During the test, the new air defence system faced a barrage of heat-seeking infrared missiles fired simultaneously.
“100% of threats are quickly defeated thanks to the high-precision laser beam,” the announcement said.
A collaboration between aerospace companies Leonardo and Thales, the laser weapon is designed for Royal Air Force aircraft such as the Shadow R2 reconnaissance aircraft and the A400M Atlas transport aircraft.
The announcement from the British Ministry of Defense did not specify whether the air defense system was fired while mounted on an aircraft in flight.
A ministry spokesman also declined to comment on the system's range and the number of missiles used in the test in Sweden, citing security concerns.

Authorities said the system includes threat warning software developed by Thales called Elix-IR, which uses algorithms to detect airborne missiles, and an infrared laser called Mysis from Leonardo.
"Threats are being intercepted faster than it takes to read this sentence," according to British Defense Secretary John Healey.
The Defense Ministry added that senior officials from several North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states were present at the test, but did not mention which countries.
