According to the recently announced first quarter financial report (March 1-May 31), Japanese retailer AEON recorded operating revenue in the Vietnamese market of more than 4 billion Japanese yen, equivalent to more than 640 billion VND, an increase of 13.8% over the same period last year.
Thus, on average, this Japanese retail giant earns about VND7 billion per day in Vietnam. Operating profit reached more than 1.3 billion yen, equivalent to more than VND210 billion, up 21.9% over the same period last year. The company said this was the highest revenue and operating profit among ASEAN countries and the second highest in the overseas market, after China.
In all markets, AEON recorded operating revenue of 109.43 billion yen and operating profit of 15.47 billion yen in the first quarter, up 3.7% and 11.4% year-on-year, respectively.
Reviewing its operations in Vietnam, AEON said promotions related to Lunar New Year and March 8 boosted sales of jewelry, cosmetics, food, gifts and related items. Sales at specialty stores in six shopping malls increased by about 8.8%.

However, some areas in southern Vietnam are still affected by slowing economic growth after several export factories closed last year.
In Vietnam, this company is preparing to open a center in Thua Thien Hue with a total investment of nearly 4,000 billion VND. The total area is about 8.62 hectares. This is the first store of this retail giant in the Central region...
Present in Vietnam in 2014 with the first shopping mall, AEON Mall Tan Phu (HCMC), after only 10 years, this Japanese retail group has quickly expanded its scale to 6 hypermarkets along with a series of small-scale supermarket chains, general merchandise centers, compact supermarkets and specialty stores.
As of May 2023, this Japanese retail group has invested nearly 1.2 billion USD in Vietnam. The group plans to develop 20 more shopping centers in Vietnam.
At the end of last year, at the Vietnam - Japan Economic Forum in Tokyo, the People's Committee of Can Tho City, the People's Committee of Bac Giang Province, Aeon Mall Vietnam Co., Ltd. and their partners signed an agreement on cooperation in researching and investing in Aeon Mall shopping centers in these two localities, each center worth about 250 million USD.
