Long An: 5 cars collided on the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong highway, causing a 5km traffic jam at noon on January 5.
At around 11:30 a.m., a container truck was traveling on the highway from the West to Ho Chi Minh City. When it reached Nhi Thanh Commune, Thu Thua District, the tractor-trailer suddenly hit the back of a rice truck in front. After the collision, the two vehicles lost control and continued to hit three other vehicles.

At the scene, five cars were lying on the road, occupying three lanes of the highway, with the front and rear of the vehicles dented. The rice truck had a dented front end, a broken windshield, and the driver was trapped in the cabin, with a broken leg, and was taken to the hospital.
The series of accidents caused a traffic jam of more than 5 km on the highway, forcing many drivers to wait for 3 hours. As vehicles entered the emergency lane, dozens of ambulances were stuck, sirens blaring helplessly.
Police had to direct cars to Highway 62 to Highway 1 to reduce pressure on the highway. By 2 p.m., the damaged vehicles had been removed from the scene.

The Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway is nearly 62 km long, has 4 lanes, and has been in operation since 2010, with a maximum speed of 100 km/h. In early 2019, the expressway stopped collecting tolls, and the number of vehicles then increased by over 30%, to 40,000-50,000 vehicles per day, causing the road surface to be overloaded and damaged.
