Statistics from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism show that during the 4-day National Day holiday on September 2 this year (from September 1 to 4), there were about 2.5 million tourists, down nearly 17% compared to the same period in 2022. The average room occupancy rate at accommodation establishments reached 55%, with the occupancy rate reaching over 60% on September 1 and 2 alone.
Basically, there were no serious incidents or problems affecting tourism activities nationwide. There were no price increases, price gouging, or overcharging or cheating tourists.
However, the National Tourism Administration assessed that some localities have not attracted the expected number of visitors due to the trend of this year's holiday season, many visitors only choose to travel nearby and travel independently near home, right at their place of residence ( staycation, drivecation ), cutting down on travel and tourism costs...
In addition, this year's September 2nd holiday is close to Vu Lan Festival (Full Moon Festival in July) and the school opening day, and domestic tourists have just finished their summer vacation, so many choose to return to their hometowns and reunite with their families during the holiday.
As a result, Ho Chi Minh City is estimated to welcome and serve 960,000 arrivals, an increase of 4.3% over the same period in 2022. The average room occupancy rate is estimated at about 80%, total revenue from tourists is estimated at VND 2,890 billion, an increase of 5.5% over the same period last year. However, compared to the April 30 - May 1 holiday, the number of visitors increased slightly (950,000 arrivals), room occupancy rate was 10% higher but revenue was lower, only reaching 93%.
Hanoi is expected to welcome and serve 640,000 visitors, up 51% over the same period in 2022. Total revenue from tourists is estimated at more than VND2,000 billion, up 54% over the same period. However, this figure is still lower than the 720,000 visitors and VND2,400 billion in revenue during the April 30 holiday.
Welcoming and serving 503,154 visitors, the number of visitors to Khanh Hoa increased by 141% over the same period. According to the National Tourism Administration, total tourism revenue decreased due to the trend of tourists this year being to tighten spending, low purchasing power, cutting costs of public transportation (planes, trains) while transportation service prices increased during peak days.
In addition, due to the complicated weather situation, before the holiday there was a warning of heavy rain during the holiday and the impact of storm No. 3 (Saola) in the Southern region and the Mekong Delta, the train routes to the island tourist areas and destinations had to stop operating, affecting tourism activities, customers canceled tours, and changed schedules.
Not to mention, domestic tourists staying in the country have decreased because a portion of tourists choose to travel abroad.
Specifically, during the September 2nd holiday this year, outbound tours are sharing market share with domestic tourists. The number of departures and destinations is very diverse, constantly changing, especially on Northeast Asian routes such as China, Taiwan (China), Korea, Japan, Hong Kong (China)... or Southeast Asian routes such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia,... Particularly on European and American routes, the number of visitors continues to increase by about 10-15% compared to the summer.
According to Mr. Tran Quoc Bao, Deputy General Director of Saigontourist Travel Company, in the third quarter of 2023 (including the September 2 holiday), the company served 48 MICE (tourism combined with events and conferences) groups going abroad with a total of more than 4,800 guests. In the coming time, the company will serve 143 groups, a total of 21,755 guests going to Korea, Hong Kong - Shenzhen (China), Taiwan (China), Thailand, Malaysia,...
Notably, the number of international tourists to key tourist destinations has basically increased, which is a positive sign for Vietnam's inbound tourism season from next October.
Of which, Da Nang is estimated to welcome 78,900 international visitors; Hanoi welcomes more than 41,700 (up 83.6% over the same period); Ho Chi Minh City welcomes 37,600 (up 15% over the same period); Khanh Hoa welcomes 23,450 (up 363.34% over the same period);...
