On the same day, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also made similar confirmations. According to The Guardian , scientists believe that humans are the main cause of extreme air and ocean temperatures. In addition, the appearance of the El Nino weather phenomenon also contributed to the abnormal temperatures in 2024.
"Not every year will be a record-breaking one, but the long-term trends are clear. We've seen the impact in heavy rains, heat waves, increased flood risk, and these will get worse if the world continues to emit," said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS).
