Impressive numbers of Can Tho after 20 years
Reporting to President Vo Van Thuong and all delegates at the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Can Tho City under the Central Government held on the evening of December 31, Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee Nguyen Van Hieu said that after 20 years of formation and development, thanks to the attention, direction, and resource support of the Central Government; the close direction of the Government; the enthusiastic and effective support and assistance of ministries and branches, Can Tho City has developed rapidly, creating a solid foundation for the new development stage.
The outstanding achievement is the expansion of the economic scale; by 2023, the total product value in the area will reach more than 118,000 billion VND, 10.2 times higher than in 2004. The average gross product per capita (GRDP/person) in 2023 will reach 94.7 million VND, 9.2 times higher than in 2004, contributing to improving the quality of life of the city's people. The economic structure has shifted in the right direction, developing industry, trade and services, gradually reducing the proportion of the agricultural sector. The socio-economic infrastructure has received investment attention, rapidly changing the appearance of the city, especially the transportation system, airport, port, cultural - sports, medical, educational - training, new rural areas, etc.
Can Tho City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Hieu delivered a speech at the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Can Tho City under the Central Government.
Important traffic projects through Can Tho City such as: My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway, North - South Eastern Expressway, Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway, Western Belt Road Project are being focused on and accelerated. Along with that, other major projects are being researched and implemented such as: Dinh An maritime channel dredging project, completing the channel for large-tonnage ships into Hau River phase 2; upgrading Can Tho International Airport; Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho high-speed railway project will continue to open up a new, stronger development space in the coming time for the city.
"The achievements in the past time are an important premise for Can Tho to develop rapidly and sustainably in the coming time, according to the goal of Resolution 59 of the Politburo: By 2030, Can Tho will be an ecological, civilized, modern city with a strong cultural identity of the Mekong Delta river region...", Mr. Hieu said.
Deserving to be the center and driving force of the Mekong Delta region
Speaking at the ceremony, President Vo Van Thuong said that Can Tho is a young, dynamic city, playing a very important role in the socio-economic, defense and security of the Mekong Delta region and the whole country; built up by the alluvium of the Hau River, a branch of the majestic Mekong River. Can Tho is known for its large fruit gardens and fields; famous as a place of "white rice, clear water", with Ninh Kieu wharf, Cai Rang floating market with unique cultural identity and values of the South; the birthplace and gathering place of patriotic businessmen such as Bui Huu Nghia, Phan Van Tri, Chau Van Liem... Can Tho people are patriotic and revolutionary, kind, generous, elegant and creative, and have made great contributions to the cause of national liberation, national reunification, and the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.
President Vo Van Thuong praised the great achievements that Can Tho City has achieved over the past 20 years.

This is an important foundation, creating momentum for Can Tho to develop rapidly and sustainably in the coming years, worthy of being the central city, the driving force of the Mekong Delta region, actively contributing to the development of the country".
The President also suggested to Can Tho some contents and orientations to continue to develop the city worthy of expectations, truly becoming a central, ecological, civilized, modern city of the region, imbued with the identity of the Mekong Delta river region. First of all, it is necessary to deeply understand the role, position, and importance of Can Tho to the Mekong Delta region. From there, focus on promoting more effectively the Central's policies and guidelines for the Mekong Delta and the city; maximize the potential and advantages of a central urban area of the region, the gateway position of the lower Mekong River region...
Next, it is necessary to further strengthen the application of high science and technology, green technology, renewable technology, digital economy development, green economy, circular economy, etc. to create new production capacity, high added value of goods and services, and competitiveness domestically and internationally. From there, turn the city into a true center of the Mekong Delta in terms of trade services, tourism, logistics, processing industry, high-tech agriculture, education, healthcare, science and technology, culture, and sports; become a core urban area, a growth pole of the Mekong Delta and the whole country; contribute to connecting our country with countries in the Mekong Sub-region.

"Promoting the tradition of the heroic city, along with the great achievements gained after 20 years of establishment, I believe that the Party Committee and people of Can Tho City will continue to achieve even greater results; constantly strive to build and develop Can Tho City into an ecological, civilized, modern city, imbued with the cultural identity of the river; worthy of being the driving center, the core urban area of the Mekong Delta region", the President expressed.
On this occasion, President Vo Van Thuong also awarded the First Class Labor Medal to the Party Committee, government and people of Can Tho City for their outstanding achievements in socio-economic development, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.
On November 26, 2003, the 11th National Assembly passed Resolution No. 22/2003/QH11 "On the division and adjustment of administrative boundaries of a number of provinces", accordingly, Can Tho province was divided into Can Tho City under the Central Government and Hau Giang Province. From January 1, 2004, Can Tho City under the Central Government was officially established and put into operation. The year 2024 is a milestone marking an important development when Can Tho completes 20 years of being directly under the Central Government.
