Beating iPS heart appears at EXPO 2025, causing surprise

Visitors were amazed to see a lab-grown heart created from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells that could beat on its own in a red culture liquid.

A beating lab-grown heart created from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells is displayed for the first time at the Expo 2025 Osaka World Exhibition in Kansai, Japan.

This is the work of Professor Emeritus Yoshiki Sawa of Osaka University, Production Director of Pasona.

The 3.3cm diameter IPS heart was created from iPS cells differentiated into cardiomyocytes - the cells that generate the heartbeat - and processed into layers of heart muscle.

Visitors can see this heart beating on its own in red culture fluid, although it cannot pump blood like a real heart.

The startup Cuorips Inc., of which Professor Sawa is the chief technology officer, created the special heart. The company is now conducting clinical trials on transplanting the heart muscle sheets in humans.

"Further research could revolutionise the treatment of heart disease," Professor Sawa stressed. "I hope the iPS heart could represent a future where heart surgery is no longer necessary."

In an interview with VNA, a representative of Pasona Group, Mr. Byron, said that the iPS heart is a highlight not only of Pasona but also of Expo 2025 in general.

Professor Yoshiki Sawa, a specialist in regenerative medicine, has developed medical technologies using iPS cells. This technology is still in its early stages. Pasona hopes that in the future this technology will actually be used to replace human hearts and save more lives.

Pasona's exhibition theme at Expo 2025 is "Thank you for life" so Pasona introduces technologies and cultures that respect and support life, support nature as well as support the happiness and health of people around the world"./.
