UGT said the lawsuit seeks to establish an employment relationship between Jota, a political content creator, and YouTube because he regularly provides his services and receives advertising revenue.

Google Spain has blocked Jota's YouTube channel "Último Bastión" (The Last Bastion) from earning ad revenue since August. He says the company has removed money that was already in his YouTube billing account.

“We consider this a severance of the employment relationship,” said his lawyer Bernardo Garcia. Mr Garcia said they had asked the court to consider Jota’s employment relationship with YouTube, and to consider the “wrongful dismissal”.

Jota's channel features left-wing political satire videos, often using feeds from official channels such as parliament and city hall. He adds subtitles and special effects to support his point of view.

Google said that content creators are not employees and in this particular case, Jota's channel did not comply with YouTube's monetization policies.

The first hearing in the case is scheduled for June 26, 2024 in a Madrid court.
