According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An province, up to now, the whole province has harvested 90,489 hectares of Summer-Autumn rice 2024, with an estimated dry yield of 6.13 tons/ha and an output of 555,093 tons. Farmers in districts and towns in the Dong Thap Muoi region of the province are busy harvesting.
According to records, the price of Summer-Autumn rice 2024 is increasing sharply, making farmers very happy and excited. However, there are also many farmers who regret having received deposits at low prices.
Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong (Binh Thanh commune, Moc Hoa district) received a deposit from a trader when his family's 2 hectares of rice (OM18 variety) was just 60 days old at a price of 7,500 VND/kg.
Currently, the price of OM18 rice has increased by 1,200-1,500 VND/kg compared to the time of receiving the deposit. Not only Mr. Cuong but many farmers in the area are in the same situation.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai (Binh Hoa Trung commune, Moc Hoa district) shared: "When traders offered the price of 7,400 VND/kg (OM18 rice), the price of rice in the market was only 7,200-7,300 VND/kg. I and many farmers around us saw the profit so we agreed to receive the deposit, no one knew that the price of rice would increase like this."
According to many farmers who are harvesting rice, after the agreement, many households were offered an additional 500 VND/kg increase in rice purchase price by traders.
Besides, farmers are even more regretful because the rice yield this crop is quite high, most of them reaching more than 6 tons/ha (an increase of 1-2 tons compared to the same period in previous years).
The only difference is the time of receiving the deposit, but currently in the same field, the price of rice has differed by 1,000-1,500 VND/kg. Accordingly, the profit also differs by 8-13 million VND/ha.
According to the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen, small-scale, fragmented production has put farmers in a passive position. The purchase and sale of "green rice" is mostly negotiated between traders and farmers.
Recently, there have been many cases of traders and farmers “breaking the deal” when rice prices increase or decrease. Therefore, farmers need to consider carefully before accepting deposits to avoid losses when rice prices fluctuate unexpectedly.
“Breaking the deal” in purchasing agricultural products has raised the requirement for linking “4 parties” in agricultural production in the direction of ensuring a balance of interests between the parties. Farmers need to link production, participate in cooperatives, and sign clear agricultural product purchase contracts with businesses to ensure long-term benefits.
