Taking us on a tour of the rose apple garden, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a farmer in Le Tri commune, Tri Ton district (An Giang province) said that her family has been cultivating this fruit tree variety for more than 25 years, with an area of about 5 hectares, each with about 100 rose apple trees.
Taking us on a tour of the pink apple garden, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan said that her family has been cultivating this fruit tree variety for more than 25 years, with an area of about 5 hectares, each with about 100 apple trees.
Sharing about this crop, Ms. Lan said: “Thanks to careful care and proper application of technical processes, the rose apple tree produces high yields. On average, a mature apple tree (over 5 years old) will yield 30 - 40 kg of fruit.
During the main season, the apple orchard can harvest 150 - 200kg per day depending on customer demand. With 5 hectares of apples, the annual yield is about 3 - 3.5 tons of fruit. With a selling price of 20,000 - 28,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, my family earns a profit of over 100 million VND/year."
Rose apple is an easy-to-grow tree with few pests and diseases. It will be ready for harvest after 1 year of planting. This type of tree is also suitable for high, dry land, but prefers regular watering to keep the tree fresh.
From flowering to harvest is about 4 months. Ripe fruit will have smooth skin, turn lighter yellow and have a fragrant smell.
To keep the rose apple tree green and have a high fruit set rate, in addition to fertilizing and spraying pesticides periodically, the technique of pruning and shaping the apple canopy after harvest is equally important. After about 3 months of pruning, the apple tree will produce fruit and will rotate through each season.
Growing rose apples requires a lot of care, but brings a good source of income in Le Tri commune, Tri Ton district (An Giang province).
“After harvesting the fruit, around March every year, my family cuts off the part of the apple tree that has produced fruit so that the tree can grow new shoots, helping the tree to yield high yields in the next crop. Every year, my family does not water the apple orchard, just leaves it natural, so the harvest time is short. Now, with the use of Nui Dai 2 Lake, my family has installed an irrigation system for the trees. With enough water, the apples will be harvested from August, so the harvest time is extended; the yield is high, and the quality of the fruit is more guaranteed,” Ms. Lan added.
Mr. Tran Van Thong’s family also has a stable income from growing rose apples. Mr. Thong said that since 2004, his family has given him more than 2 hectares of rose apple garden to take care of.
After more than 20 years of care, Mr. Thong commented: “Although growing rose apples requires a lot of care, the profits are good, so I am determined to stick with this crop. With only a modest area, my family earns nearly 50 million VND each year. Realizing the effectiveness of the model, my family plans to expand the apple growing area to supply the market.”
The reality of the rose apple growing model of farmers shows that this is a promising crop that brings in a good income, suitable for the soil and farming conditions of farmers in Le Tri commune. Vice Chairman of Le Tri Commune People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Hai (Tri Ton district, An Giang province) said that in the coming time, the Commune People's Committee will continue to mobilize farmers to renovate ineffective mixed gardens to grow crops with high economic value, including apple trees.

At the same time, coordinate to find output and build a linkage model to consume products for the people to feel secure in production.
