On the afternoon of July 1 (local time), in Seoul, within the framework of the official visit to Korea by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, at the Vietnam-Korea Tourism Promotion and Cultural Cooperation Forum, witnessed by the Prime Minister and officials of the two countries, Vietnam Airlines presented a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation with Korean Air and four travel companies in Korea.

Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines will coordinate with partners to promote two-way investment and tourism, support each other in promotional activities, marketing and cooperation on aviation products and services.

30 years ago, Vietnam Airlines flights took to the skies between Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul, South Korea. The first direct flight route not only opened the aviation market of the two countries, but also served as an important bridge to promote economic, cultural and social exchanges between Vietnam and South Korea. Proud to be the airline that laid the first bricks to build and develop the vibrant aviation market as it is today, over the past 30 years, Vietnam Airlines has made continuous efforts to expand its flight routes and upgrade its fleet of aircraft on the Korean route.

To date, the airline is operating 6 direct routes: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Seoul; Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Busan; Da Nang - Seoul and Cam Ranh - Seoul, with an average frequency of up to 112 flights per week. Vietnam Airlines is also the first and only airline in Vietnam to operate modern wide-body aircraft Airbus A350, Boeing 787 on the Korean route, bringing outstanding service experiences to passengers.

Over the past three decades, Vietnam Airlines has operated a total of 65,000 flights, transporting 15 million passengers and 291,300 tons of cargo between Vietnam and Korea. Korea is also one of the fastest growing international markets in Vietnam, with an average annual increase of 26% before the pandemic, reaching 1.3 million passengers/year in 2019. Although the pandemic has had a very serious impact, with the airline's proactive solutions and the market's recovery, the number of passengers in 2023 has returned to the same level as in 2019. In the first five months of 2024, Vietnam Airlines recorded serving more than 562,000 passengers.

“In order to further develop the route in the future, Vietnam Airlines aims to open new flight points, increase frequency and improve service quality at all touch points. At the same time, we will continuously seek and expand cooperation opportunities with airlines, partners and customers in the Korean market. Through that, Vietnam Airlines is proud to always be a reliable wing, deeply connecting the country and people of Vietnam and Korea.” – Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa shared.

Not only an aviation bridge between destinations, Vietnam Airlines' Korean route has promoted economic growth, tourism, and culture between Vietnam and Korea, as well as connecting the friendship and people-to-people exchange between the two countries over the past 30 years.

In 2022, Vietnam and South Korea upgraded their bilateral relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Currently, Vietnam and South Korea are each other's third largest trading partners.

In the aviation sector, since the Korea-Vietnam route was officially connected, Korea has been one of the fastest growing international markets in Vietnam, with an average annual increase of 22% before the pandemic, reaching more than 9.65 million passengers in 2019. In 2023, the total number of passengers on the Vietnam-Korea route has recovered quite positively after the pandemic, reaching 8.25 million passengers, equivalent to 85% of 2019. In the first 5 months of this year, the number of passengers on the route reached more than 4.4 million.

With these figures, Vietnam is among the top destinations for Korean tourists. Conversely, Korea is also the top destination for tourism, study and work for Vietnamese people.
