China increases imports of Vietnamese durian

It can be seen that China is one of the largest durian consumption markets in the world. According to statistics from the Chinese Customs, in the period 2019-2023, China's durian imports increased by an average of 27.8% in volume.

In 2023, China's durian imports will continue to increase sharply, reaching 1.4 million tons, worth 6.7 billion USD, up 72.9% in volume and 65.6% in value compared to 2022; up 135.8% in volume and 318.5% in value compared to 2019. The average price of imported durian to China in 2023 will be 4,709.6 USD/ton, down 4.2% compared to 2022.

In January 2024, the export value of Vietnam's fruits and vegetables reached 510 million USD, an increase of 24.9% compared to December 2023 and an increase of 112.1% compared to January 2023. The export value of fruits and vegetables in 2024 is expected to reach about 6 - 6.5 billion USD.

Previously, Thailand was the main supplier of durian to China. In 2023, the market share of Thai durian in China's total imports decreased to 65.1%, reaching 929,000 tons, worth 4.57 billion USD, up 18.5% in volume and 18% in value compared to 2022. The average imported durian price from the Thai market was 4,709.6 USD/ton, down 4.2% compared to 2022.

Meanwhile, in 2023, China will sharply increase durian imports from Vietnam, reaching 493,000 tons, worth 2.1 billion USD, up 1,107.0% in volume and 1,035.8% in value compared to 2022.

Vietnam's durian market share in China's total imports increased sharply to 34.6%. The average imported durian price from Vietnam reached 4,332.2 USD/ton, down 5.9% compared to 2022.

Vietnam's fresh durian has been officially licensed for export to the Chinese market since July 2022. The Plant Protection Department has completed the procedures and documents to request China to grant a license to import frozen durian from Vietnam. According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), if Vietnam's frozen durian is licensed, the export prospects of this item will continue to be positive.

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, durian is considered a strength of Vietnam in the Chinese market, with up to 708 growing areas and 168 packaging facilities licensed to export to China. In addition, to anticipate products that will be signed the Protocol such as passion fruit, coconut and frozen durian, businesses have made careful preparations.

Fruit and vegetable export target of 6 billion USD

Continuing the growth momentum of 2023, in January 2024, the export value of Vietnam's fruits and vegetables reached 510 million USD, an increase of 24.9% compared to December 2023 and an increase of 112.1% compared to January 2023. In the structure of exported fruits and vegetables in 2023, the fruit category achieved the strongest growth rate, of which durian contributed to this strong growth, reaching 2.2 billion USD, an increase of 430.1% compared to 2022. In addition, other exported fruits also achieved positive growth rates such as jackfruit, mango, etc.

In addition to fruit varieties, exports of processed products will also grow significantly in 2023, which is a market trend and Vietnam's processed fruit and vegetable products will also bring positive growth results, reaching 1.28 billion USD, up 19.9% ​​compared to 2022.

Vietnamese fruits are present in many markets around the world, especially in large markets with strict quality requirements, affirming the position of Vietnamese fruits, which opens up many great opportunities for the fruit and vegetable industry.

With the results achieved in 2023, the export prospects for fruits and vegetables in 2024 are very positive, when many types of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables dominate many large markets in the world. The export value of fruits and vegetables in 2024 is expected to reach about 6 - 6.5 billion USD.

The main factors that can help the fruit and vegetable industry achieve its goals in 2024 include: Demand in the largest fruit and vegetable export market, China, remains high; Vietnam is still negotiating with China to have more products officially exported to this market; Vietnam continues to promote exports to major markets such as the US, EU, Australia, Korea, etc.

As consumers around the world increasingly recognize the positive benefits of plant-based nutrition as well as its positive, sustainable impact on the environment, the trend of consuming plant-based foods is growing in the global market.

Besides durian, many Vietnamese fruits have also had export shipments in the first days of the new year of Giap Thin 2024. Among them, it is possible to mention the batch of star apples in the Mekong Delta that was successfully exported to the US; dragon fruit to China... On the afternoon of February 15, in Hai Duong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the export ceremony of a batch of carrots of Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company to the Japanese market.
