On the afternoon of July 10, Mr. Nguyen Van Khang, Director of Dong Thap branch of Thi Son Production and Construction Company Limited, said that the sand mine handed over by Dong Thap province to the company for direct exploitation to serve the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway will be proposed to stop exploitation.

The contractor stopped exploiting sand for the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway because the sand did not meet the requirements for highway construction.

Mr. Khang explained that the quality of sand at this mine is not suitable for the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway. At the same time, the exploitation of sand at this mine is also very difficult.

The proposed sand mine to be stopped is located in Dinh Yen commune, Lap Vo district, with an area of 20.97 hectares. The total reserve of sand for filling that is allowed to be exploited is 482,282m3. The exploitation capacity is 357,282m3/year.

The company started exploiting this sand mine on December 14, 2023. To date, the company has exploited 190,000m3 of sand. On average, the contractor exploits about 32,000m3 of sand per month.

Also according to Mr. Khang, after the sand mine was approved by Dong Thap province to stop exploitation, to ensure the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway package under the responsibility of Thi Son Production and Construction Company Limited, the company will propose using sea sand.

Or another option is that the company will use enough sand from the sand mine handed over by Dong Thap province to Hoang Anh Construction and Trading Company Limited for direct exploitation in Tan Khanh Trung commune, Lap Vo district, with an area of nearly 37 hectares, after this sand mine is exploited again.

The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway project connects many provinces in the Mekong Delta. In phase 1, the project has a total investment of more than VND 27,200 billion, divided into two component projects including Can Tho - Hau Giang, 36.7km long, with an investment capital of over VND 9,700 billion, and the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section, 72.8km long, with a capital of nearly VND 17,500 billion. The project started on January 1, 2023, and is expected to be completed in early 2026. The total demand for sand for the entire project is about 18.1 million m3. In 2023 alone, 9.1 million m3 is needed and in 2024, 9 million m3 is needed.
