Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuc (30 years old), from Phu Quy island district (Binh Thuan), worked as a saleswoman for a footwear company, then a teacher at a non-public kindergarten. The work was hard but the salary was low, when the pandemic broke out, children did not go to school, Ms. Phuc was laid off. After a long period of no income, she thought she had to find a new job.
Cooking is one of the professions that attracts workers to study to change careers.
"Recently, tourism has recovered and developed strongly, the number of tourists visiting domestic destinations is increasing, including my hometown Phu Quy Island. My family saw the potential so decided to build a small hotel to serve visitors to the island. That's why I also decided to take a short course on restaurant and hotel management at Viet Giao Vocational College to gain knowledge to develop my business in my hometown," Ms. Phuc shared.
According to Ms. Phuc, she previously knew absolutely nothing about the restaurant and hotel industry. After taking the 3-month course, she acquired a lot of knowledge and skills about tourism and attracting customers.
Meanwhile, Ms. Mai Thi Duong (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) used to work in restaurants and hotels, but right after the pandemic, business faced many difficulties. When tourism recovered, Ms. Duong felt tired and decided to change careers. "I enrolled in accounting at Ho Chi Minh City Polytechnic College. After graduating, I worked as an accountant for a motorbike company. Many of my friends were also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and went to study other professions to find new jobs like me," Ms. Duong said.
Discussing this issue, Master Dang Van Sang, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Polytechnic College, informed: "In the past 2 years, many people have registered to study intermediate or short-term courses at schools or vocational training centers to switch to a new job, because they lost their jobs or their jobs no longer had the desired income. At the school, the medical major has more than 50% of students who have had other jobs."
At Nguyen Tat Thanh College, the cosmetology industry has attracted many workers to study after the Covid-19 pandemic. Mr. Hoang Quoc Long, the school's principal, shared: "Many students who used to work in garment companies lost their jobs, so they came to school to register to study skin care and nail care for 3-6 months. The employment rate is almost 100% because the demand for this industry is very high."
Similarly, the beauty care industry at Khoi Viet College has also attracted many students to choose to change their careers after the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. "In addition, there is the cooking profession. Students only need to study for 3-6 months to get a job right away, with a salary of 5-7 million VND/month," said Mr. Tran Thanh Duc, Principal of Khoi Viet College.
Meanwhile, the profession of kitchen, housekeeping, restaurant - hotel management at Viet Giao Vocational College is also the destination for workers who want to change careers. Mr. Tran Phuong, Principal of the school, said: "There are many tours, restaurants, hotels, homestays being opened, along with accommodation and food services to serve tourists, so many people register for short-term courses in kitchen, housekeeping, room, restaurant - hotel management".
