Why do you often have a sore throat when you wake up?

VnExpressVnExpress11/09/2023

A sore throat in the morning can be caused by dehydration, sleep apnea, or a cold or flu virus.

Sore throats are very common, and their severity varies depending on the cause. Here are some common reasons why a sore throat is worse in the morning.

Allergy

Allergies to environmental substances such as pollen, mold, animal dander, and dust mites irritate the nose and airways. This leads to a sore, scratchy throat when you wake up in the morning. Over-the-counter allergy medications can help relieve this irritation.

Dehydration

The body does not function properly without adequate hydration, excessive sweating. If you do not drink water for many hours at night, you may wake up with a sore throat and difficulty swallowing. Dehydration also causes headaches, fatigue, dizziness, dark urine, constipation. The amount of water needed each day depends on age, height, weight and weather conditions. The standard recommendation is 8 glasses of water per day.

Snoring

When you snore loudly, your throat relaxes and air passes through your windpipe, causing the tissues around it to vibrate. This constant vibration in your airway is a common cause of a sore throat. Snoring also causes your throat to feel dry and scratchy when you wake up.

Sleep apnea

People with sleep apnea have throat muscles that relax and block the airway when lying down, making it difficult to breathe. Waking up with a scratchy throat or dry mouth are signs of this condition.

Viral infection

Infection with a common cold or flu virus is also a cause. Other symptoms of these viruses include cough, runny nose, sneezing, fever, hoarseness, headache, nausea, and swollen glands in the neck and jaw.

Viral infections usually clear up in 5-7 days without treatment. Antibiotics do not work on viruses, so use over-the-counter pain relievers to relieve a mild sore throat or high fever. People with a sore throat that is severe and lasts longer than a week should see a doctor.

Acid reflux

This is a digestive disorder that occurs when stomach acid flows back up the esophagus into the throat. Hoarseness and sore throat make the patient feel uncomfortable in the morning. Treating acid reflux can improve inflammation and sore throat.

Tumor

Sore throat can also be caused by benign or malignant tumors near the neck, in the throat, on the tongue, near the larynx. Tumors in these locations also cause hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, strong breath, blood in the saliva. If you have these symptoms, you should be checked to rule out cancer.

HIV infection

HIV infection causes a sore throat or flu-like symptoms in the early stages. Fungal infections (thrush) in the mouth and throat can also develop due to a lack of immunity. People who suspect they have HIV should get tested. HIV infection can be controlled with medication, and the earlier it is detected, the better. Treatment and medication reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others.
