On the evening of June 3, Lieutenant General To An Xo, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security, answered questions at a Government press conference about recent prominent drug cases.

Lieutenant General To An Xo affirmed that the Ministry of Public Security always identifies drug crimes as crimes of all types, so the organization of the fight against them is directed very fiercely and closely.

"In the past 6 months, the police force has detected and prosecuted over 13,000 drug-related cases with over 20,000 subjects; seized 14,225 kg of heroin; 4,023 kg of synthetic drugs; 982,039 synthetic drug pills and 210 kg of marijuana," the spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Security informed.

According to Lieutenant General To An Xo, through the fight against drug trafficking and transportation on many routes and key areas, closely linked with other types of crimes, it has emerged that foreigners colluded with some domestic subjects to illegally trade and transport drugs.

Foreigners take advantage of air routes to illegally transport drugs at some airports in Vietnam; those who enter or transit to bring drugs into Vietnam for consumption or to third countries.

"A typical example is the flight attendant case. After discovering it, the Ministry of Public Security investigated, uncovered clues, and arrested 200 related subjects. This case will continue to be investigated. Currently, transporting drugs by air is quite complicated," said Lieutenant General To An Xo.

In addition, Mr. To An Xo also warned that the situation of drug use organized in dance halls, bars, and high-rise buildings in some localities is complicated. Due to profits, some entertainment venues and owners of some business establishments with security and order conditions and sensitive services have turned a blind eye to drug use right at the establishments they manage.

Lieutenant General To An Xo said that the fight must stop the supply, but the most important thing is to reduce the demand, which means reducing the number of people using and addicted to drugs.

As of March 15, the total number of drug addicts and users was 233,906 people, of which more than 184,000 were addicts; nearly 50,000 people illegally used drugs.

"The current goal is to reduce demand, make residential areas and villages drug-free, help drug addicts quit, and make people shun and exclude drugs when they hear about them," the spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security emphasized.

Mr. To An Xo said that the Ministry of Public Security will continue to conduct special projects to arrest and block the supply source, even attack the organization, the network, and the ringleader, not attack the transporters individually, and coordinate with countries sharing the same border to jointly intercept drug crimes early and from afar.
