Starting this semester, Lee joins the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) as a specially appointed professor.

At a press conference on April 11, recalling his iconic 2016 match with AlphaGo, Lee expressed his hope to help students develop problem-solving and innovative thinking skills that will help them lead in the AI era.

AlphaGo is a Go-playing program developed by Google's DeepMind Technologies since 2015.

According to Lee, AI is not a competitor but a partner: “By working with AI, we can break free from the constraints imposed on ourselves.”

This semester, Lee will be teaching a course called “Board Game Design for Scientists.” In the course, students brainstorm and build their own board games. The class encourages logical and creative thinking, and Go is a key part of the curriculum. Through it, students are exposed to complex problems and learn how to develop solutions. He wants to help students better understand how humans and AI can coexist.

“Even though I tried to play Go creatively, I still had fixed ideas that I was not aware of. Only through competing and collaborating with AlphaGo was I able to break through these mental constraints – and I want to share that experience.”

According to the Korea Times, Go "legend" Lee Se Dol dominated the international stage for 24 years and 4 months before retiring in 2019. In March 2016, he became the only person to win against AlphaGo, although he lost the final match 1-4. Since then, no human has been able to defeat this AI.

His decision to join a science and technology university has attracted much attention. He said the reason for stepping onto the podium was to promote creative and bold thinking in students.

On the UNIST side, the university is also looking to transform its educational and research environment, integrating AI in all fields to better suit the new era. UNIST President Park Chong-rae wants to equip all students, regardless of their major, with basic knowledge of AI. The university will also create an AI-supported learning environment with small language models (SLMs) and automated laboratories.

Lee's match with AlphaGo sparked debates about the relationship between humans and AI. While some see AI as a threat to jobs, others have expressed concerns about overreliance. The former Go grandmaster said

“We must be prepared to leverage the fruits of AI in areas like art and technology, while enhancing the uniquely human capabilities that distinguish us from machines,” Lee said.
