"We must resolutely punish organizations and individuals who do not strictly implement the prevention of infectious diseases, at the same time promote and replicate good and creative practices of the locality, so that Thu Duc can maintain its current results. If we are still negligent and subjective, the risk of an outbreak like in 2022 may occur," Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc directed.

On July 6, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc and the working delegation inspected the actual work of preventing dengue fever in Thu Duc City.

Conducting a field survey in Hiep Binh Chanh Ward, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, the inspection team noted that the work of preventing infectious diseases at An Loc Kindergarten (No. 8A, Street 21, Hiep Binh Chanh Ward) was strictly implemented.

According to the school, rooms, equipment, and toys for children are cleaned and disinfected twice a week, so since the beginning of the year, there have been no cases of children with dengue fever or hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD).

However, at the 3-hectare housing project site of the Forestry and Agricultural Products Company Limited (Road 28, KP 4, Hiep Binh Chanh Ward), the inspection team noted that there are still many locations at risk that have not been treated, while local people are still subjective and negligent about the epidemic; some locations have become places to store construction material waste, interspersed with dilapidated houses; in many places, water and household waste have not been collected and disinfected...

Chairman of Hiep Binh Chanh Ward People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc Tuan said that in addition to the land of the Forestry and Agricultural Products Company Limited, there are two large projects in the area that have been planned for many years but have been slow to be implemented, namely the Regulating Lake project (25 hectares) and the Binh Trieu Station project (over 47 hectares); about 1,000 old, dilapidated rental rooms are at high risk of spreading the epidemic. Since the beginning of the year, the locality has recorded 119 Covid-19 cases; 66 dengue fever cases (down 61% compared to the same period in 2022) and 86 hand-foot-mouth disease cases.

“In the past 4 weeks, the ward has not recorded any new cases, this is an encouraging sign for the locality to continue to strengthen measures to prevent infectious diseases,” said Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan.

According to Vice Chairman of Thu Duc City People's Committee Nguyen Ky Phung, from the beginning of 2023 to now, Thu Duc City has recorded 92 outbreaks with 1,037 cases of dengue fever (down 48% compared to the same period in 2022); there were 672 cases of hand and foot lice, but worryingly, in June, 414 cases of hand and foot lice were recorded (up 266% compared to May). Thu Duc still has 950 risk points, of which 637 points have been inspected and monitored; 4 points have been removed and 10 new points have been added.

The Vice Chairman of Thu Duc City People's Committee shared that Thu Duc has a large area, a large immigrant population, and there are still some households that store water in jars and lakes for livestock farming and watering ornamental plants, creating a favorable environment for mosquitoes to breed and develop.

Meanwhile, the inspection and handling of dengue fever and TCM risk points in some wards have not been drastic, and the administrative sanctions against organizations and individuals who do not strictly implement epidemic prevention and control according to Decree No. 117/2020/ND-CP of the Government have not been drastic. There is a lack of personnel to carry out epidemic prevention and control work in residential areas.

Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc assessed that the prevention of dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth disease and Covid-19 in Thu Duc City is basically good, controlling infectious diseases, however, there is still subjectivity of a few people and the lack of drastic participation of some localities.

“We must resolutely punish organizations and individuals who do not strictly implement the prevention of infectious diseases, at the same time promote and replicate the good and creative practices of the locality, so that Thu Duc can maintain its current results. If we are still negligent and subjective, the risk of an outbreak like in 2022 may occur,” concluded Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc.

“People need to spend 10-15 minutes each week cleaning their living and working areas, both inside and around the house. Do not let water accumulate to create mosquito larvae, turn over unused buckets, jars, and bottles, scrub and change the water in flower vases and water bowls at least once a week, clean the porch, roof, and gutters, etc. Cover jars, ponds, and barrels of water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs and breeding mosquito larvae. For places that contain water that is not used for drinking or daily activities, fish can be released to kill mosquito larvae. Use mosquito repellent sprays, incense, and creams, wear long-sleeved clothes, and sleep under mosquito nets even during the day to avoid mosquito bites,” recommended Dr. Le Hong Nga, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC).
