Many measures to limit the spread of fake news and false information on social networks

Faced with that situation, in recent days, the Ministry of Information and Communications has continuously issued instructions and implemented many measures to limit the spread of fake news and untrue news on social networks.

Mr. Le Quang Tu Do, Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information (PTTH&TTĐT - Ministry of Information and Communications) said that to prevent fake news and untrue news, the Ministry of Information and Communications has directed press agencies to continuously update official information on flood prevention work; immediately correct and refute rumors and fake news spreading on unofficial news sites and social networks.

At the same time, the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information has also posted warnings about fake news and untrue news on the website of the Vietnam Center for Handling Fake News and Toxic News; Fanpages of the Department on social networks such as Facebook, TikTok... to communicate to people as quickly as possible.

Coordinate with local anti-fake news centers and departments to re-share warning information posted by the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information on websites, social networks, etc. so that people can get information in an official manner.

According to Mr. Le Quang Tu Do, the Ministry of Information and Communications also directed the Departments of Information and Communications to coordinate with local police forces to search for and immediately handle subjects spreading fake news, untrue news, causing public confusion.

Mr. Le Quoc Vinh, Chairman of Le Bros, a pioneer in the fight against fake news and false information on social networks for a long time, said that in order to prevent fake news and false information from those who take advantage of the flood situation, it is necessary to proactively and strongly communicate this issue on official channels.

According to Mr. Le Quoc Vinh, to fight fake news, it is necessary to clearly state what is real news and what is official news. In addition, if fake news is discovered, it must be widely publicized to prevent it. For newspapers, it is necessary to proactively have a fact-check page, so that everyone knows what information is real and what is fake.

Besides, Chairman Le Bros also said that the current fine of 7.5 million VND is too light, compared to the amount of money that those who spread fake news and bad news earn by attracting views and likes.

From a platform perspective, Mr. Nguyen Lam Thanh, Policy Director of TikTok Vietnam, also said that the platform always complies with the regulations of the authorities.

Specifically, when there is a notification confirming that content on TikTok is fake news from authorities, the platform will remove this content according to the provisions of the law.

If accounts violate community standards and local laws, TikTok can take regulatory action such as removing content, or even locking accounts for serious violations.

To raise awareness among users in Vietnam, following the direction of the Ministry of Information and Communications, on October 11, 2023, the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information in collaboration with VnExpress Newspaper, FPT Online Services Joint Stock Company and TikTok Vietnam organized a program to launch activities of the communication campaign to raise awareness among Internet users in Vietnam called the Tin Campaign.

With the message "News online, news correctly", the News Campaign provides information and basic skills so that Internet users can recognize and avoid fake news and toxic news.

After 2 months of organization, the News Campaign has received great attention from press agencies, media and the public. Along with that, the Anti Fake News content creation contest within the framework of the Campaign has attracted more than 50 entries, earning more than 130 million views after nearly 1 month of implementation.

In addition to the contest videos, there were more than 100 videos reporting on the program, with nearly 280 million views. In particular, the Anti Fake News message was responded to by many content creators through hashtagging their posts. By November 20, there were nearly 1.5 million videos with the Anti Fake News hashtag on the TikTok platform, reaching more than 5 billion views./.
