After nearly 4 years of operation, Gia Lai Silkworm Cooperative (Ha Long 2 village, Kdang commune, Dak Doa district, Gia Lai province) has cooperated with local people to expand the area of mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising in a sustainable manner, bringing in high income.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hung - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Gia Lai Silkworm Cooperative: His family has been involved in the silkworm farming profession for more than 30 years in Lam Dong, a profession that is often referred to as "eating standing up" because of its hardship.

Recently, the land fund for growing mulberry and raising silkworms in Lam Dong is not much left to expand the production area in the same region and plot. Therefore, in 2022, he went to Gia Lai to find opportunities to develop this traditional profession.

“After a day of surveying the land and climate in Ha Long 2 village (Kdang commune, Dak Doa district), my wife and I decided to buy 10 hectares of land in the adjacent area, then planned the mulberry growing area, invested in an advanced and economical irrigation system, a technical production area, a silkworm farm, housing for technical staff...

From there, we decided to move our facility from Lam Dong to Gia Lai to cooperate with farmers to develop the silkworm farming profession. At that time, this profession was still quite unfamiliar to the people here" - Mr. Hung said.

To stabilize the farm, Mr. Hung established the Gia Lai Silkworm Cooperative with 9 members; at the same time, he invited people with a lot of experience in growing mulberry and raising silkworms from Lam Dong to work for the cooperative with relatively high remuneration.

“Gia Lai has a large land fund and a climate suitable for growing mulberry and raising silkworms. Therefore, the cooperative has invested in all stages for farmers, from guiding technical processes, providing materials, high-quality mulberry and silkworm breeds, and purchasing all of the people's cocoon products. From there, farmers can confidently invest in production without worrying about output.

The cooperative's approach has attracted many farmers in the districts of Dak Doa, Mang Yang, Kong Chro, Duc Co, Chu Prong, Chu Se, Chu Puh, An Khe town... to seek cooperation in developing the mulberry growing and silkworm raising profession, bringing high economic efficiency" - Director of Gia Lai Silkworm Cooperative shared.

Currently, Gia Lai Silkworm Cooperative has invested in building a factory specializing in producing silkworm farming tools such as winnowing baskets and baskets in Mang Yang district to supply to people in and outside the province.

In particular, the cooperative continuously invests in expanding the area of mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising and links with local people to produce and consume products.

The advantage of sericulture is that the investment cost is lower than that of long-term industrial crops such as coffee, rubber, pepper, fruit trees, while the harvest cycle lasts 15-20 years, the harvest time is fast and stable, suitable for many working ages. If technical advances are applied, productivity will increase, costs and labor will be reduced.

Up to now, Gia Lai Silkworm Cooperative has built 3 stable silkworm farms with an area of over 30 hectares. Of which, the facility in Ha Long 2 village is 10 hectares wide, the facility in village 4 (Gao commune, Pleiku city) is 11 hectares wide and the facility in Ia Phang commune (Chu Puh district) is 9 hectares wide.

In addition, the Cooperative has built purchasing points in Chu Se, Chu Puh, Chu Prong, Duc Co, Dak Doa, Mang Yang districts, An Khe town and Kon Tum province.

Currently, on average, the Cooperative supplies more than 3,000 boxes of silkworm seeds to farmers each month. After raising for about 18 days, each box of silkworms yields about 70-80 kg of cocoons. The Cooperative fully consumes the product at the market price of about 200,000 VND/kg.

Every week, the cooperative purchases about 30 tons of cocoons from local people in the province. Notably, the cooperative currently provides jobs for nearly 200 unskilled workers with a stable average income of 7-10 million VND/month depending on the job.
