Spain Referee Danny Makkelie gave a second yellow card but forgot to send off Sevilla's Marcos Acuna on the evening of May 18.
When the second leg of the Sevilla - Juventus semi-final entered the 114th minute, referee Makkelie showed Acuna a yellow card for a slow throw-in. Before that, in the 57th minute, he had given the Sevilla player his first yellow card.
Leandro Paredes, Acuna's Argentina teammate who now plays for Juventus, reminded the referee of his omission to show him a red card. Makkelie then went forward and sent off the Sevilla defender. Before leaving the field, Acuna waved his arms and shouted in protest at the referee's decision.
Playing with one less man in the final minutes, Sevilla still successfully defended the score 2-1. Acuna and his teammates entered the final with a 3-2 victory.

Five minutes into the first extra period, another Argentinian player, Erik Lamela, headed in the decisive goal for Sevilla.
With the red card, Acuna will have to sit out the final on May 31. Sevilla's next opponent is Roma, who beat Leverkusen 1-0 in the other semi-final.
