Among the thousands of children, teenagers, parents, and teachers participating in the STEAMese Festival 2024 to explore the power of STEAM education, there are many girls excited about this technological playground.

STEAMese Festival 2024 is organized by STEAM for Vietnam, UNICEF, the US Mission to Vietnam, Scratch Foundation and Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The program offers many fun and learning activities to inspire curiosity, innovation and collaboration.

Around 2,500 children and young people aged 8-16 took part in key challenges, including the Coding Maze, the AI Kingdom and Robot City. Each activity was designed to inspire problem-solving, creativity and teamwork. These activities highlighted key skills and competencies that will help them adapt, shape and envision a more creative future.

Ngan Giang (middle) has had a passion for STEAM since childhood.

Attending the STEAMese Festival 2024 with her mother, 7th grader Dam Ngoc Ngan Giang (Nguyen Quy Duc Secondary School, Hanoi) was very excited and looking forward to experiencing technology activities. When the speaker introduced the robot, Ngan Giang felt very excited. She immediately took out her phone to record the robot.

Ngan Giang said that when she was a child, when she watched TV and saw that robots had many applications in life, she was very passionate about robots and searched for and learned about programming. Currently, creating a robot is her biggest dream. "There is an autistic friend near my house. I want to create a robot to be friends with children, so that they do not have psychological problems," Ngan Giang excitedly shared her dream.

STEAMese Festival 2024 attracts the attention of many girls

Since 4th grade, Ngan Giang has been able to write code and “hack” her mother’s computer and bank account. Since 6th grade, Ngan Giang has been sent by her mother to study programming. She is writing software to build a website to support students from 6th to 8th grade in learning science subjects.

“Before, I was not good at science subjects. However, since discovering the learning method, I find these subjects very interesting and easy to learn. I realized that there is no difficult subject, no boring subject, it is just that I have not found the right learning method. That is why I want to create an application to help those who have difficulties with science, making them love these subjects,” said Ngan Giang.

According to Ngan Giang, STEAM is still a strange concept to many students. “Many students do not know about STEAM, so they always think that STEAM is difficult and boring, not interesting. I believe that if students are exposed to STEAM early, many will love this science subject.”

Technology games attract the participation of many children

Sharing the significance of the STEAMese Festival 2024, Ms. Silvia Danailov - UNICEF Representative in Viet Nam said: “We need to ensure that children and young people are better equipped for the changing world. Employers across Viet Nam have found that transferable skills, such as problem solving, communication and creative thinking, are still lacking among most young graduates - both male and female. Enhancing and investing in STEAM education and transferable skills is a key priority for Viet Nam and a deep commitment of UNICEF”.

“Through our partners, UNICEF is investing in digital learning opportunities to prepare young people in Viet Nam for the future,” added Ms. Silvia Danailov.
