Researchers from the Future Industries Institute at the University of South Australia (UniSA) have unveiled a design for a floating ocean farm (pictured) that could produce fresh water for drinking and agriculture.

Farm turns seawater into fresh water

Accordingly, the solar-powered self-powered system on the farm can help solve the shortage of fresh water by evaporating seawater and recycling it into fresh water through two chambers. One chamber is used to collect seawater, which is then condensed and transferred to the plant chamber. Researchers have used this method to test growing broccoli and bok choy on the surface of seawater. Fresh water can also be used in daily eating and drinking activities.

The advantage of UniSA’s design is the vertical arrangement of the evaporator and growth chamber, which reduces the overall footprint of the unit, maximizing the area for food production. According to UniSA, the unit is fully automated, low-cost and very easy to operate, using only solar energy and seawater to produce clean water and grow crops.
