On March 10, the Southern Hydrometeorological Station issued an update on the salinity intrusion situation in Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern provinces. Accordingly, in the Ho Chi Minh City area, the 4‰ salinity line penetrated about 70 - 75 km deep into the Saigon River.
On the Saigon River, salinity of 4‰ may penetrate 5 km deeper in the coming days due to high tides combined with strong northeast monsoon winds.
Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station
It is forecasted that next week, water levels at most stations will rise rapidly following the high tides of early February of the lunar calendar. The highest tide peak may occur from March 11 to 13. The highest salinity at most stations is higher than the same period in 2023 and the average of many years. On the Saigon River, the 4‰ salinity line penetrates about 75 - 80 km deep. The level of natural disaster risk is at level 3.
The salinity intrusion situation in the Mekong Delta provinces is equally severe, partly due to the low water flow from the upper Mekong River. Specifically, the water flow through Kratie station (Cambodia) is about 24.1% lower than the same period in 2023 but still about 8.8% higher than the average. The water level at Kompong Luong (Cambodia) is about 0.09 - 0.22m lower than the same period last year and the average of many years, the volume of Tonle Sap (Cambodia) is about 0.18 billion cubic meters lower than the average of many years.
In early March, the 4‰ salinity boundary was about 58 - 63 km from the Tien River mouth; about 40 - 50 km from the Hau River mouth.
From March 11 to 13, the peak of high tides was approximately equal to or even higher than the same period last year on rivers in the Southwest region. High tides caused deep saltwater intrusion. The highest salinity at most stations was approximately equal to or higher than the same period in 2023 and the average of many years. The 4‰ salinity boundary is about 60 - 65 km from the mouth of the Tien River and about 45 - 55 km from the Hau River.
