Recently, the General Statistics Office announced a report on the labor and employment situation nationwide in the second quarter of 2023.

Accordingly, the Vietnamese labor market is facing many challenges when it is affected by prolonged negative shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic, declining global demand, etc. Accordingly, many businesses lack orders, and the situation of workers being forced to take time off, quit their jobs, and lose their jobs continues.

Although the labor force and working population increased compared to the previous quarter (Q1/2023) and compared to the same period in 2022, the unemployment rate among working-age people increased compared to the previous quarter. Specifically, there were about 1.07 million unemployed people, an increase of more than 25,000 people compared to the previous quarter and an increase of more than 1,900 people compared to the same period in 2022.

At the same time, labor tends to shift to the service or informal sector (ie working freelance, without signing labor contracts) due to pressure from businesses to lay off workers. This shows that the labor market is recovering but not really sustainable.

Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong lead the country in the number of unemployed workers in the second quarter of 2023.

Statistics show that the number of employees taking leave from enterprises nationwide in the second quarter of 2023 was more than 241,000, of which the majority were in foreign-invested enterprises (accounting for 84%), mainly concentrated in the leather and footwear industry with 66%, followed by textiles and garments with 14% and mainly concentrated in some provinces such as Bac Giang, Binh Duong, Quang Ngai, Tien Giang, Binh Phuoc, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa.

Notably, the number of workers who lost their jobs in the second quarter of 2023 was nearly 218,000 people. Of which, the majority were workers in the textile, footwear, electronic components and products manufacturing, and wood processing industries.

The number of unemployed workers is mainly in Binh Duong (about 83,200 people), Ho Chi Minh City (about 30,400 people), Bac Ninh (about 10,700 people), Bac Giang (about 9,300 people)...

The average income of workers in the second quarter of 2023 is 7 million VND, a decrease of 79,000 VND compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 355,000 VND compared to the same period in 2022.

Compared to the same period in 2022, workers' living standards improved more slowly this quarter. Although workers' average income increased, the income growth rate decreased by nearly half.
