Ho Chi Minh City will apply Southeast Asian tourism standards to develop sustainable tourism and enhance tourist experiences.

At the "ASEAN Tourism Standards Implementation" Conference this morning, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Hieu, said that the city will apply regulations on security, safety, hygiene and environment according to the ASEAN standards for the period 2016-2025 to Ho Chi Minh City tourism. This move aims to enhance the experience of tourists, aiming to develop sustainable tourism for the most vibrant commercial and service center in the country.

The ASEAN tourism standards set out requirements for energy management and reduction, sustainable use of natural resources and efficient waste management. If successfully applied, Ho Chi Minh City will both minimize negative impacts on the environment and develop tourism activities.

For businesses, this set of standards is the backbone for building tourism products and services, thereby creating a quality tourism environment and building the reputation of Ho Chi Minh City as a reliable tourist destination. In the coming time, each tourism business in the city will proactively plan a roadmap for applying ASEAN tourism standards.

"To adapt to the general development trend of the region and the world, standardizing the services of tourism service establishments nationwide in general and in Ho Chi Minh City in particular is an important and necessary condition to improve the quality of Ho Chi Minh City's destinations. Therefore, the urgent solution is to learn and apply the model of ASEAN tourism standards," said Ms. Ngoc Hieu.

Also at the conference, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Deputy Director of the Hotel Department, General Department of Tourism, said that not only Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnamese tourism industry will promote the implementation of ASEAN tourism standards, including green hotels, accommodation with rooms for tourists to rent, community tourism, sustainable tourism products, MICE (meetings, conferences and exhibitions) venues, clean tourism cities, public toilets, and spa services. All are aimed at sustainable development, environmental friendliness, and energy saving.

"Vietnam's tourism industry aims to truly become a spearhead economic sector by 2030," said Ms. Thanh Binh.

At the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in the Philippines in January 2016, ASEAN Tourism Ministers announced the ASEAN Tourism Development Strategy to 2025. Member countries have developed a set of standards that include criteria and basic requirements for tourism products and services to standardize the tourism industry in the region. The role of the standards is to improve the quality of tourism in Southeast Asian countries, build ASEAN into a high-quality tourism destination, and bring diverse and unique experiences to visitors.
