“They can trample on international law. They can violate the United Nations Charter,” Mr. Guterres told world leaders. “They can invade another country, lay waste to entire societies or completely disregard the well-being of their own people and act as if nothing happened.”

Mr. Guterres also warned about the tense situation in Lebanon, which is at risk of becoming a "second Gaza" amid the conflict with Hezbollah, and stressed the need for peace based on international law.

“People are paying the price – the death toll is rising, lives and communities are being shattered,” Guterres said, adding that this was the time for a just peace based on international law and the UN Charter.

“Geopolitical divisions are deepening. The planet is getting hotter. Wars are breaking out without any idea how they will end… We are heading towards the unthinkable – a powder keg that threatens to engulf the world,” he said.

Mr Guterres warned the world was approaching an unprecedented crisis, with nuclear weapons and conflict on multiple fronts, but remained optimistic that these challenges could be solved through global cooperation.
