(CLO) Russian President Vladimir Putin praised US President Donald Trump in an interview published on February 2, expressing his belief that the US will soon "restore order" in Europe under President Trump.

Speaking to journalist Pavel Zarubin on state-run media channel Russia-1, President Putin hinted that Europe would have to accept its position under Mr. Trump.

Mr Putin noted that Mr Trump had very different views from his predecessor Joe Biden on many issues, including foreign policy and socio-cultural values. He also said that the political elite in Europe had “some problems” with Mr Trump, whereas in the past they easily accepted instructions from Washington.

According to Mr. Putin, Mr. Trump's victory has left Europe in a state of confusion, but he believes that the American leader will quickly restore order. "Trump, with his character and perseverance, will soon restore order in Europe...", he said.

Putin’s comments come amid growing concern about the future of the Ukraine crisis as Trump returns to the White House. The new US president has vowed to end the four-year conflict, but has yet to hold talks with Putin about a peaceful solution.

Relations between Russia and the West are at a level not seen since the Cold War, as NATO continues to provide military and financial support to Ukraine. However, Mr Putin expressed confidence that Mr Trump would take a different approach than his predecessor.

On January 20, Mr. Putin sent congratulations to Mr. Trump on the occasion of his inauguration for a second term, and declared that Moscow was "ready for dialogue" with the new administration on the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Russian leader previously criticized former President Biden for the breakdown in relations between the two countries, saying that current tensions stem largely from the US response to the Ukraine crisis.

While there have been no formal talks between the two leaders, Trump said he would soon speak with Putin and other parties involved to seek a solution to the conflict. "Talks are being scheduled, including with Ukraine and Russia," Trump said on February 2.
