The US does not know where many weapons aid to Ukraine go?

(Dan Tri) - The US weapons delivery tracking system for Ukraine is quite confusing, causing many officials in this country to not know whether the delivery has been made or not.

Tens of billions of dollars worth of US arms deliveries to Ukraine have been hampered by a confusing tracking system, with many officials in Washington not even knowing whether certain weapons have been delivered.

During the final year of President Joe Biden's administration, important arms shipments to Ukraine faced lengthy delays, Reuters reported.

The issue is worrying because the US stockpile is running low and there is a risk that the transfer could trigger an escalation of tensions with Russia.

Another major problem that has arisen is that the Pentagon's system for tracking weapons transfers is quite confusing, and even the definition of "transferred" is interpreted differently among units in the US military.

A report from the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the Pentagon's "distorted" data made it nearly impossible to accurately identify weapons in transit at any given time.

Investigations by the Pentagon Inspector General and the GAO also found that the US government did not fully understand the number of weapons transferred and the extent of delays in this operation.

The Pentagon later updated internal guidance to clarify the term “transferred,” but it remains unclear how widely the reform has been implemented in practice.

Delays have also emerged as a major problem, and they persist even after Congress broke a months-long impasse over an additional $60 billion in aid to Ukraine.

As a result, by November 2024, only about half of the total weapons from the stockpiles that the US had committed to provide to Ukraine in 2024 had been delivered. The figure for armored vehicles was about 30% as of early December last year.

A US official expressed frustration with the pace of the transfer and said the delay had prevented Ukraine from making any significant progress on the battlefield.

In January 2024, the US Department of Defense Office of Inspector General released a report revealing that the Pentagon could not fully track more than $1 billion in arms aid to Ukraine.

At the time, the Pentagon was accused of failing to “fully comply” with tracking requirements and also failing to complete an inventory of all equipment sent to Kiev.
