French President Emmanuel Macron on November 7 called on Europe to assert its security independence from the United States and protect the bloc's interests against geopolitical rivals.
"We should not entrust our security to the United States forever," AFP quoted French President Macron as saying at the European Political Community Summit in Budapest, Hungary.
He argued that US leader Donald Trump would rightly defend the interests of the American people, while asking: "Are we ready to defend the interests of the European people?"
Will the European right rise after Trump's victory?
This is not the first time the French president has made such comments. In April, Mr. Macron also called for Europe to produce missile shields, long-range surface-to-air missiles and other items to build a strong enough defense system.
"We need to build a strategic defense system for Europe. Europe must protect what is important to it, whether with allies or alone," Bloomberg quoted Mr. Macron as saying at Sorbonne University (France).

The summit took place in the context of Mr. Trump's election as the 47th US president. Other leaders at the summit also had a similar message about strengthening Europe's own defense and common security. According to Reuters, this is considered a clear signal sent to US President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Accordingly, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said: "There is consensus that Europe should take more responsibility for its peace and security. Frankly, we cannot wait for the Americans to protect us."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for unity in the European Union (EU), saying no member state can tackle the challenges ahead on its own.
"The future of Europe is in our hands. We have shown that Europe can take responsibility by standing together," Ursula von der Leyen added.
What does Trump's victory mean for the world?
At the meeting, European leaders also discussed important strategic issues, including transatlantic relations, international security and ways to strengthen the EU's competitiveness and resolve current conflicts, according to Reuters.
