President Donald Trump pledged on February 4 that the United States would take over the Gaza Strip after Palestinians were resettled elsewhere, a move that would break with decades of Washington policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The statement was made by Mr. Trump at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on a visit to the US.
Previously, the US leader also proposed the idea of sending Palestinians in Gaza to neighboring countries for permanent resettlement.
“The United States will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will own and be responsible for removing all the unexploded bombs and other dangerous weapons in the area. We will take over this area, develop it, create thousands of jobs, and make it something the entire Middle East can be proud of,” the US leader added, stressing that Gaza could become home to “people from all over the world.”
For his part, Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Mr. Trump for “thinking outside the box with fresh ideas,” demonstrating “a willingness to break with conventional thinking.”
However, Mr. Trump did not provide specific information about how the US would take over Gaza or under what authority to manage this area in the long term.
“This is a long-term commitment and it will bring great stability to the Middle East,” the US President said, adding that he had discussed the idea with regional leaders and received support.
Also during the meeting, the head of the White House declared his support for the "permanent" resettlement of Palestinians, despite the idea of "clearing Gaza" previously being firmly rejected by Arab leaders.
