In the eyes of foreigners, Hanoi is not only the capital of Vietnam, but also a place of inspiration, helping them find peace and sincere feelings in the heart of a rapidly developing city. From the ancient streets to the gentle lifestyle of the people of Trang An, all bring them a deep affection. Through the sharing of American actor Charlie Win and Canadian musician Alex Formosa, we will explore the special feelings that Hanoi has left in the hearts of international friends.

American actor Charlie Win: “Hanoi – The place I love from the bottom of my heart”

For the past 14 years, I have had the opportunity to live and work in Hanoi, a place I love from the bottom of my heart. Not only is Hanoi the capital of Vietnam, it is also the cultural heart of this country, where the values of civilization, culture, and civilization that have existed for thousands of years are preserved. The pace of life here may be fast and hurried, but one thing remains unchanged, which is the calmness and politeness in the way Hanoians communicate.

During my journey to explore Vietnam, I traveled through 45 provinces and cities, participated in many cultural tours, and had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people from all over the country. From the historical events at Dien Bien Phu to the cultural heritages in Hoi An, I got closer to the Vietnamese people, both in the plains and the ethnic minority areas. Everywhere I went, the history and identity of each region seemed to permeate me, making me understand more clearly the strength and resilience of this nation.

Hanoi has always been a special place to me. The saying ‘Hanoi is never in a hurry’ says it all about this city. Although the transportation infrastructure, technology, and residential areas have developed rapidly, Hanoi’s culture and identity have been firmly preserved. Hanoi is not only where I live, but also my second home, where I deeply feel the value of community and solidarity.

As an actor, I have had the opportunity to participate in many cultural and historical events. Understanding the ups and downs that the country has experienced, I always admire the country's strong will through many wars.

In 2023, I participated in filming a historical program at the Opera House, to commemorate the sacrifices and losses of past generations. Those sacrifices not only brought peace and territorial integrity, but also helped people today live happily and prosperously. We should always remember history, honor and cherish the social values we have, because nothing is more precious than independence and freedom.

Canadian musician Alex Formosa: “Hanoi is a peaceful place”

Hanoi appears simple, peaceful and familiar in the eyes of international friends. Alex Formosa, a Canadian composer and instrumentalist, has come and lived in Hanoi for nearly 10 years.

“For a long time, I have always wanted to visit Vietnam, I cannot give an exact reason why, but this country has always been a part of my life. In my late 20s, after saving some money, I decided to travel to Hanoi” - He shared.

Upon arriving in Hanoi, Alex admitted that he wanted to live and work long-term in the capital of Vietnam due to the cultural similarities between the place and one of the places he had lived, Malta, a Mediterranean country.

“I feel at home when I come here,” he shared.

In his eyes, Hanoi is one of the most wonderful cities in the world, a city rich in culture. Not only famous for its bustling life, the city also has simple and slow features. The image of ancient streets and the culture of iced tea are strongly imprinted in his heart.

During his 8 years living and working in Hanoi, Alex has been to many famous places, but he is “in love” with the strong yet loving personality of the people of the capital. He emphasizes that what makes the capital unique is the people instead of the famous places.

“Hanoi is not just a tourist attraction. What makes this place special is its people. People are the best part of this city,” he shared.

In his spare time, this artist chooses to enjoy a cup of hot brown coffee next to West Lake. Hanoi cuisine also captivates him, making him miss it every time he leaves Hanoi. The simplicity and rusticity of Hanoi are what steal his heart.

“I really like Vietnamese culture and I think the next decades will be a beautiful time for the country, especially the capital Hanoi. I don’t think it needs to change much. I really hope in the future I can spend more time here and live here if possible.”
