Hanoi Many people buy chicken testicles, goat testicles... to eat to improve their physiology, but experts warn that the effectiveness has not been verified and is harmful if abused.
Married for more than two years, Ms. Nhung, 31 years old, in Thanh Hoa, has no children. The doctor examined and determined that both husband and wife had no abnormalities in reproductive health. Thinking that work pressure made their bodies tired and exhausted, the couple bought many foods to enhance physiology.
Believing that "what you eat is what you get", she often prepares dishes from animal testicles such as chicken, goat, cow, fish..., spending millions of dong each week, eating until she is sick of it but still tries. However, after half a year of continuous eating, she and her husband still cannot conceive.
Dung, who has been infertile for 10 years, also sought to nourish her husband's physiology in the hope of getting pregnant. She searched the internet and saw advertisements selling chicken pearls at quite diverse prices, from a few hundred thousand to over a million VND per kilogram. One page advertised a price of 250,000 VND per kilogram for turkey chicken, while another page advertised a price of over 700,000 VND per kilogram. Dong Tao chicken pearls were sold for 1.2 million VND per kilogram.
Meanwhile, goat testicles cost between 300,000 and 500,000 VND/kg depending on size. A goat meat trader also said that the price of "gems" from Ninh Binh rock mountain goats can be up to one million VND/set, or even several million VND depending on the age of the goat.
"It's not something you can buy if you want," said Ms. Dung, adding that the seller advertised that "this type of testicle must come from goats raised in the rocky mountains of Ninh Binh, where there are four seasons and lots of medicinal leaves, so the goats will eat it and it will be stored in their meat, and the testicles will be of the best quality."
Not knowing the truth, Ms. Dung still decided to buy a set of Ninh Binh testicles every month to nourish her husband, in addition to dishes made from chicken, beef, fish... After half a year of application, the couple still had no good news, and her husband even suffered from metabolic disorders, increased blood fat and uric acid, and had to take long-term medication.

"You are what you eat" is a popular concept that is still believed and applied by many people. However, experts say this is a misunderstanding and can even cause serious harm, making the disease worse.
"Scientifically, to know whether a certain food is really nutritious and good for the body or not, we must know the ingredients and nutritional content of the food," said Dr. Ha Ngoc Manh, Vietnam-Belgium Andrology and Infertility Hospital.
There is currently no research to prove that foods such as chicken and goat testicles can improve vitality and cure erectile dysfunction, according to Dr. Manh. In fact, animal testicles contain a hormone similar to testosterone (male hormone) that the male body can use. Therefore, eating these foods can improve male hormones, helping men feel healthier and have more desire.
In terms of nutrition, internal organs have a fairly high protein content, accounting for about 20%. Eating foods high in protein will help the body feel more excited and full. Moreover, protein is the main component involved in the sperm production process, so when supplementing protein, men will increase the amount of semen.
"However, this does not mean that physiology will improve in the long term," the doctor said, explaining that eating a lot causes blood protein in men's bodies to increase, leading to the risk of gout.
In addition, the concentration of saturated fat and cholesterol in animal organs in general and animal testicles in particular is very high. Therefore, consuming a lot can cause high blood fat, harmful to the cardiovascular system, especially in the elderly, obese people and people with metabolic disorders such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Not to mention, many people have misconceptions about the effects of animal testicles, the increased demand has led to the smuggling of these products for consumption. Smuggled products are inherently unsanitary during transportation, do not guarantee quality, and pose unpredictable health risks.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duy Thinh, former lecturer at the Institute of Biotechnology and Food, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that eating animal testicles to increase sexual function is just a rumor, without scientific evidence. This part is expensive because of the limited supply. In medicine, foods that can enhance sexual function when combined with certain medicinal herbs and used properly will be effective, and their effects will vary.
"Any internal organs always contain high levels of cholesterol, eating too much can lead to metabolic disorders," Dr. Manh warned. Not to mention, animal testicles decompose very quickly and are easily invaded by bacteria, so there is a potential risk that the seller uses preservatives.
To maintain male performance, Dr. Manh advises men to improve through a scientific diet, exercise and proper rest. If there are signs of physiological decline, it is necessary to see a specialist for appropriate treatment.
