Blood in urine in women can be a warning sign of cancer

VnExpressVnExpress08/06/2023

Blood in the urine in women is a manifestation of the most common diseases such as infection or inflammation, vaginal bleeding, cervical bleeding, and even cancer.

According to Dr. Nguyen The Truong, Deputy Head of the Department of Urology - Andrology and Nephrology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, the most typical clinical symptom of hematuria in women is urine that is light pink, red or dark. The patient does not experience any pain or discomfort, only blood in the urine.

Urinary system diseases that cause hematuria in women include:

Urinary tract infection

Due to the biological structure, the female urethra is straight and short, so urinary tract infections are prone to occur. Urinary tract infections can occur in the urethra, ureters, kidneys or bladder.

In addition, patients also experience other symptoms such as abnormal changes in urination frequency, painful urination, pelvic pain, etc.

Urinary tract stones

Urinary tract stones are the accumulation of excess minerals inside the urinary system in solid form. Urinary stones usually occur in the bladder or kidneys.

When the stones tear or scratch the lining of the urinary tract or other organs, blood mixes with the urine in the kidneys or bladder and is excreted with the urine.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when tissue that normally lines the uterus grows inside or outside the uterus. The most common places for this tissue to grow are the pelvis or abdominal cavity.

People with endometriosis will have tumors that cause the uterus and surrounding areas to swell or bleed. This is the main cause of blood in the urine in women. In addition, the patient will suffer from cramps in the lower abdomen and pelvic area.

Cancer

Cancer is the most serious complication of urinary diseases but the symptoms are more serious, including blood in the urine in women.

The two most common types of urinary cancers are bladder cancer and kidney cancer. Although this cause is not as common as the above urinary diseases, patients who detect symptoms of hematuria should go for examination and cancer screening to minimize risks.

Doctor The Truong said that usually, blood in the urine in women is not a complicated disease or requires long-term treatment. Some cases can heal on their own. However, if the symptoms last 3-5 days or are accompanied by symptoms such as burning urination, pelvic pain, lower abdomen; difficulty urinating; obvious change in urination frequency (urinating more or less); nausea and vomiting; fever, chills... the patient needs to see a urologist.

If hematuria persists for a long time, it can easily cause anemia and reduce overall health. In addition, urinary diseases that cause hematuria in women, if left untreated for a long time, can easily progress to chronic and other dangerous complications.
