Sharing with DW (Germany), striker Etonam Nicole Anyomi of the German team said: "The match against the Vietnamese women's team shows that it doesn't matter who your opponent is and you have to play with 100% of your ability.
The Vietnamese women's team is not a big team like England, but you still need to fight every second, play bravely and play football in a fundamental way."
The German women's team is currently the European runner-up and second in the world on the FIFA rankings. However, they did not play really impressively in the friendly match with the Vietnamese women's team on the evening of June 24.
Germany opened the scoring early in the 3rd minute thanks to Paulina Krumbiegel, but it was not until the 80th minute that they doubled the gap with a goal from Janime Minge. During the match, they were in danger of being equalized by Vietnam several times. In the second half's injury time, Nguyen Thi Thanh Nha broke through and scored to narrow the gap to 1-2 for the Vietnamese women's team.
Germany controlled 72% of the ball, fired 23 shots but only 6 were on target. The sharp defense and counterattack ability of the Vietnamese women's team made the home team's heart stop many times. If goalkeeper Merle Frohms had not been excellent, Duong Thi Van, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung or Vu Thi Hoa could have scored.
Striker Laura Freigang said of her teammates' performance: "If you watched this match, you could see that the German women's team were not in the best shape and this affected the result.
"However, we know our strengths. We know we have to be ready to defend. However, I still believe that Germany is among the top teams at the 2023 World Cup."
After the match, Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said: "We are not satisfied. I have to gather the team, not just some players but the whole team. That is not the way we want to play football."
